Software Update & Other Random Thoughts/Rants

This past week my check engine light came on and the clock on my IDrive system froze so I brought it back to the dealer. Dealer said that it needed a software update, has anyone else needed this? Not really sure what the software update was for; I'm looking through other BMW forums and it seems that for other models their software update changed the HUD display color, exhaust sound, and the way the car remembers settings when shut off.

On another note, I was given an M-Sport X3 35i for a loaner vehicle for the weekend. I'm extremely impressed with it, it took corners and picked up speed way better than I had expected.

I also had the dealer do the state inspection for my car, and after the software update the car needed to be driven a little to pass the inspection. A little annoyed that when I picked up the car it had an extra 100 miles... I guess I can't be too mad, I do manage to put way more miles than I should on each of their loaners that I get.

100miles!? wtf....I would think 10-20 is appropriate but maybe I'm way off.

Not sure exactly how miles were needed on the car after the software update, but 100 miles may be understandable. When I first got the car, I had to get it up past 1,500 miles before it would pass. They did waive the $40 inspection fee to make it for it though, not much I could do about it about it at the time but I'm glad they stepped forward about it.

CEL came on GF 328d the other day was also software update needed. I almost pulled over and called a flatbed since to me CEL = stop driving immediately. You would think they'd have another warning system for just basic no problem stuff.

My dealer says if it is s/t major it will say something like 'pull over - engine damage can occur', otherwise ok to drive it. 'Learning to trust' was always a bad subject for me, but I'm trying to get with the new smart car and read the details on the check codes - I did keep from punting into the shoulder the first time the tire reset came up, just after getting the summer tires on (it basically needs to be turned on long enough to reset pressures, but I thought it meant they had put 4 empty tires on and sent me home to figure it out).

Knowing how unpredictable CEL's are at turning on and off, 100 miles isn't that unreasonable to me. They want to make sure it's not a fluke that there's no light before passing the inspection. Some states are worse - I think MA is 300 miles after a CEL reset before you can pass inspection.

I definitely understood that it was part of the process, just wished they would let me know beforehand so I could be aware of it.

Mercifully no inspections needed in Michigan. And New York gave them up decades ago, no value added. Just meddling by busybody nannies.

NY has not given up on inspections, tho we wish they would. Another post on this forum is lighting up now, as they just decided to get tough on tint laws. DK if they check codes, but doubt it - it isn't a very thorough system if you go thru a smaller shop (wife's car just passed with blown taillight and a missing swaybar end link).
