Its not just with BMW, I've done some maintenance to my Lexus recently, 60k service. Local mechanics wanted more money then Lexus and Toyota dealers. $500-600 just for plugs without parts. When I asked BMW indy about carbon cleanup on N55, he quoted me $1200-1300 as far as I remember.

Strange business tactic for the Indy shops.. Most I've dealt with are competeing with Dealership services to gain the out-of-warranty clientele.
Example: MY local indy BMW guy does a walnut blasting carbon service for $4-600 to compete with the $800+ dealership quotes. He gets a TON of business just as a gateway from this service alone, and he says he makes a decent profit at those rates as well. Just like suspension jobs, these cars are nothing special when it comes to a spring/coilover install, there's no reason to charge 6-7 hours when it can be done in under 3. He charges a flat rate of $450 for most spring installs for BMW, less for coilovers ($250 I think). He has a state of the art shop, great tools, and he's open on Saturdays. That is how you run a successful Indy Euro shop, in my opinion of course..
