ZF 8HP fluid change - overfill by 0.5L for transmission cooler?
Wondering if anyone who replaced their ZF 8HP transmission fluid followed the step where you overfill with 0.5L of fluid if transmission oil cooler is present.
I believe in the F22 m240i there is a transmission oil cooler present, correct me if I am wrong. I'm going to tackle this service soon and this wasn't clear to me on my research online. The ZF manual clearly states to overfill by 0.5L if transmission cooler is present, which on the F22 M240i is, but I don't see any videos or DIY guides which follow that step or even state it. And how do you overfill correctly? You initially fill once fluid starts dripping out, then attempt to put another 500ml in? Probably wont be able to get exactly 0.5L in. |

Just food for thought. Do you drain the oil cooler separate from the trans? The fill procedure has you fill so far then run it to a certain temp (circulate through the cooler??) then top off to over flow at the filler. Seems to me the oil cooler is covered with this procedure.

yeah after some additional thinking I realized that it covers the oil cooler.
I thought for a second it was regulated with a valve that is temperature controlled, but I was mistaken. Thanks for the info and confirmation. |

Keep in mind that the ZF8 is used in a lot of different cars. So, details in the procedure may not carry over across all cars. Even across all BMW's.
I didn't worry about it when I changed my fluid. Just followed the procedure to bring it up to temp, fill to overflow, and then you're done. You did say that the cooler doesn't have a thermostat valve. Where did you see that? Since you aren't draining the cooler separately, I would think the majority of fluid likely stays in the cooler anyway. Especially if it has a thermostat valve to prevent flow. So, no reason to think about it unless you are completely replacing everything. Or building it new at the factory, which may be where that reference comes from. They don't do the fill procedure when the car is built. It comes as a prefilled sealed unit and they just drop it in. In that case, they would have to add extra to account for the cooler. If it really bothers you, I did see one video for a Dodge Charger where they said to do the fill procedure normally. Take the car out for a drive to heat up the transmission fluid fully. Then let the car cool and run the fill procedure again. However, none of the BMW videos or write-ups I've seen do that. And it seems like overkill to me. |

For those folks that have had their transmission fluid changed, and that experience whining noises after the service, do you have an opinion on why that happens? Got my trans fluid changed and I now intermittently get whining noises when driving, mostly in 1st gear under medium to heavy acceleration around 3 to 4K RPM's. I brought it back to the shop and they gave everything a once over, checked the fluid level, and all. They couldn't determine why it was happening just that I know it did not happen before the service.

I have not experienced any whining after my fluid change. So, sorry, no ideas on that. I would guess maybe a fill issue, but if you said they checked fluid levels again, that would tend to rule that out. Other guess might be that new fluid disturbed a crud layer on one of the clutches. If so, that should probably ease as crud builds up on it again. But I am guessing.
Changing the fluid was an extremely messy, fiddly, stinky job. Even though I generally do my own maintenance, if I hit the 100K mark I might just pay to have someone else do it next time. |

You don't need to do anything special if you have a cooler. If you follow the procedure, you will be fine.
I have seen people who after doing a service were able to get a little more fluid in the trans later but it was mostly because they didn't get it right the first time. It has to be bought up to temp and the correct procedure needs to be followed in order to get the new oil pumped everywhere it needs to be in order to get enough fluid in the trans.

By the way, nice mods list. A couple of my bigger mods were also the M Perf LSD and Apex Ec-7's. Do you have any pics on your car posted on the forum here? I'm looking at doing some exterior mods this year and looking for inspiration for a front splitter, read diffuser, and new trunk spoiler.

I'll be honest, i did it myself at a place where I was able to rent a hoist and followed the instructions, but made a mistake on not checking if the gasket was seated right. And I did follow the torquing sequence, i guess getting the gasket to sit right or flush is difficult task. Ended up slightly seeping and wasnt comfortable with it so took it to a shop that fixed it for me with new parts lol. IDK how ppl do it with jack stands on their driveway, but thats just me, maybe I'm a noob. |

I bought the parts and had it done at an Indy BMW specialist... very good reputation but anything is possible and everyone makes mistakes.

yeah the ZF kit includes the pan with pre-installed gasket. You can have the right torqueing sequence but if your not making sure the gasket is flush to the transmission case then its prone to leaking. It is real finicky job or I maybe just made a mistake.
