anything worth getting from their lifestyle and accessories if one were to accept the $300 voucher?

my BMW Assist expires 1/13/17. Worth the retrofit?

Depends on whether you plan to renew your subscription. I plan to renew for the safety features, so the retrofit is worth it to me.

I got the new box installed, they had to keep the car overnight. It took them 4 hours to program the new box, this plus the parts is likely costing BMW a lot more than $300.

I have a NBT retrofit so obviously I haven't used the assist service since. I will have to reattach the combo and reinstall the old hw and coding. Not sure if it's worth the $200

So

"$300 BMW lifestyle/accessories voucher for in-center purchases"

Does that mean I can only use this credit at the dealership that is deactivating the system or would I get a voucher code that can be used at any BMW dealerships?

when i inquired about it at my dealership while getting my HVAC checked, they told that if i went with the $300 voucher, i'd have to use it there.

i'm still deciding whether i want the $200 GC or go forward with the retrofit in hopes of retaining resale value.

Was your car coded in any way prior to the installation? Curious if you lost any of the coding.

I agree that this upgrade has been costly for BMW.

But it's solely because of their own stupidity. I've got an X1 manufactured in March 2015 that is in need of the upgrade. Who in their right mind would believe that a 2G-only based system was an appropriate technology choice in 2015 - when LTE was already well-established?

When you make stupid decisions you deserve to be penalized. Whether or not one actually uses this system should not be a factor in its upgrade. A future buyer of the vehicle might want it, and without it your car will be worth less. With technology on the march, perhaps much less.

Considering they are only covering a fraction, less than 5% of cars with Combox, I think it is costing them far less than what it deserves to cost hem...

No. BMW is not providing the retrofit if you don't have an active subscription which extends past the shut off in January of the 2G services even if you want to pay for it.

I'm having a hard time figuring out why I would want to upgrade other than keeping the car up to date.

That said, my notice says there would be a charge of $199 a year, but does anyone know if you have to commit to more than one year?

I can only talk about my situation. I wasn't charged anything. There was a notice which I had to read and click through stating if I wanted to renew service, it would be $199 a year.

I went back and forth on whether I wanted to do the retrofit or take the $200 and run. Then I figured I still have over a year left in the service as part of me buying the car new. So that's $199 right there as my included service with buying the car new expires 1/2018. Then there's the parts cost and the labor to get the car updated. So in overall value, I am making out more than the $200 gift card. And it gives me the option to continue service later if I feel like it. If I opted out and took the $200, that's it. No going back and getting the retrofit done later.

Get a cell phone.
Use it!

Whenever I am in traffic and need to navigate around it, I pull out my phone and use Google Nav as it provides way better that BMW/Atlas on-board navigation.
Oh, and Google Nav actually has all street correctly mapped, shocking, I know.

You can pay year-by-year.

Still, $199 for inferior towing service is about 3x what you would pay for AAA. And AAA service covers all of your cars, not just that one BMW.

BMW clearly

In BMW's defense, they are not the only OEM to play deer-in-headlights with 2G/CDMA turn down. Nissan, VW, FCA, GM, and others are also in the same boat.

Neah, mostly people have no clue what BMW assist service is, what it does, nor would pay for it outside of free-service window.

The value from this upgrade on the used car market will be the same as the extra value from selling used car with BMW assist subscription == ZERO.

That's part of what I'm thinking. We already have AAA for my wife and it's like $35 to add me.

Before you decide. Try the app for navigation and send to car. Much easier and quicker than entering through car system.

Also, FWIW, had a GL450 and was in accident and MBZ called immediately to check on us and dispatch police/fire. Comforting when you have children and the wife driving your vehicle at times.
