Read my post from last week entitled: comments on the 235 after 1st track event
The cooling is amazing! Never exceeded 115 c (240 F) oil temp and never heat soaked. Was passing heat soaked 335's on the straights like they were standing still. |

I installed the OBDLINK LX Bluetooth adapter in my M235i. My retired Nexus 4 running
Torque pro is being used as the info display. It fits perfectly in the center column when the ash tray is removed. The charger turns off automatically after the car is shut off. When I turn the car on the system comes back to life without my input. The guage color is actually the same as the amber dash guages, it just doesn't show it in the phone pic. I've learned a lot about how my driving affects the oil temp in the engine. |

Coding question
Is it possible to disable the active sound amplification of synthetic engine noise through coding? If not, I assume one must disconnect a specific cable plugged into the stereo amplifier (access through the trunk as seen on a Youtube video for non-2 series model).
Thanks. -Robert. |

Yes it is -- in fact, it must be done via coding. Check this subforum here for details. Now, back on topic ...

Also, what's with the section of the secret menu called Acoustics? I was brave enough to try it as i assumed i could not hurt much as everything would return to default upon the next engine start. I heard several different chimes, but I heard nor saw any clue regarding what was taking place.

Does anyone know what the codes in the "Check" menu mean? Is there some list for this?

Monoblock do you leave it running on your obd2 all the time or only turn it on when you want it and unplug it? wondering if you can just leave it and autorun torque through tasker once paired.

I had a Mk6 GTI before. Oil temp was around 100C (212F) when cruising, and would peak at 115C (239F) only after some spirited driving uphill. And not only does the M235i run hot, it seems to retain the heat more than other cars as well. A friend parked his Audi S3 next to my M235i tonight. We arrived at the same time, his oil temp was 98C (208F), mine was 115C (239F). We left at the same time after 2 hours. His oil temp had dropped to 51C (124F), mine was still as high as 78C (172F). Would they have designed the car to run at such high temps and to retain so much heat? Any benefits in doing so? |

Not only does the N55 retain heat better than most engines, but the B58 is the champion of heat retention. For the B58, BMW has uses an engine-mounted encapsulation system which incorporates what they call the "heat management module", which (according to their training manual) allows the engine to retain much of its heat for up to 36 hours. "The heat management module is electrically operated and computer controlled. The opening cross-sections of the engine coolant passages can be variably opened and closed using a rotary valve. The Digital Motor Electronics (DME) require elements including the coolant temperature from the coolant temperature sensor and the material temperature of the cylinder head from the component temperature sensor to correctly position the rotary valve." Keeping the engine hot helps to reduce emissions and wear and tear during start-up, especially in colder climates, not to mention you get instant toasty feet in the morning. |

Very interesting to get this info. I'd been thinking that the heater warm up was exceptionally fast, but figured they put the heater core real close on the engine side of the thermostat loop.
My understanding is that, in general, oil temp is best kept hot, so this is a good thing. It also speaks well to the key factor in design of the cooling system - its ability to shed the extra heat. Here we have two examples from such different ambient temps, and both maintain temps at about the same target point. Ramos tracked in so-Cal springtime (doesn't list ambient, but I'm assuming fairly warm - it's almost Mexico), and Slamau gets essentially the same numbers at 41degrees. The concept of 'running hot' is more applicable to older systems where they did not have this flexibility, so if you were at 240 cruising, you were going to hit 260-280 on a hard pull (but put a bigger cooler on it, and you may never really warm up to full temp while doing regular driving). All this is a good argument for not needing temp gauge, but I'm still itching to try to set up that OBD-smartphone setup or the vent gauges. |
