This isn't a dig against the M235i (which, by all accounts, is looking amazing), but this article seems to compare optimistic C&D performance figures for the M235i with some of the more commonly accepted values for the E9X M3. For example, I'm sure a pro driver can do better, but I've logged several VBox 0-60 mph (1 foot rollout) runs at 4.4 s with my 6MT E92, and I've run 12.9Xs at 110 mph at the dragstrip.

By way of comparison, C&D's numbers for the E92 M3 were 0-60 mph in 3.9 s and the 1/4 mile in 12.4 s at 114 mph. I don't think ANYONE else has recorded an E92 M3 on stock tires with a 3.9 s 0-60 mph, and that 1/4 mile ET and trap speed seem better than anything else I can recall seeing.

Again, not a dig in any way; the review seems awesome. It's just always better to compare apples to apples.
You left out the other C&D test figures for the E92 M3, which was more realistic.

On the M235i, the other two mags are quite similar.

MT:
0-60 4.4
QM 13.0 @ 106.6 mph

R&T:
0-60 4.5
QM 13.1 @ 107.8 mph
I wasn't trying to leave anything out, bud. Those are exact performance metrics on the E92 M3 as tested by C&D (from the following link: http://media.caranddriver.com/files/...ac-cts-v-2.pdf) in one comparison test, and I cited them as one example of C&D's optimistic testing results. If you want to cite other, more conservative articles that C&D might have published, that's great, but my point wasn't that C&D is always wrong--just that they often have very optimistic results because of the different testing methods mentioned in an earlier post.

Again, I have no interest in disparaging C&D, the new M235i, or the old E92 M3....but when it comes to performance metrics, I never cite C&D as my realistic gauge of performance figures. I'm a big fan of their writing and photography though!

As the owner of a mere US spec E36M (1997 332i), it's kind of nice not having a "Real" M car. The replacement parts are much more affordable, and you can toss your car around the track with much more abandon since you're risking fewer dollars.

The numbers on the M235 look good. There's plenty of performance for my schlog to and from work. the only time I might have HP envy of an M car is on the long straight of some tracks. Unfortunately, my track days are fewer and further in between, so I'll be happy lapping in whatever.

I STILL NEED 4 DOORS...Just in case BMW NA is listening.

Have you tried pricing one on bmwusa.com? I have. Paint is $550, add M-sport suspension etc. and the price climbs pretty quickly. $44k LOL. That is funny! Do you think the dealers order many M235is with no options?
No I havent priced one on bmwusa but I bought one at the dealer. Base price is $44k and its already well equip. Sure we can add options that can run up to $60k but doesnt all models do that?

Try pricing a 3/4 series with all the same standard options on the 235 and you'll only get a 3/428 (not saying 2 is better than the 3/4)

I got 3% off msrp then another $1000 incentive and if y'r a CCA member you get another $1000 off...so my car with Prem pkg, heated pkg, CF spoiler was $44k OTD before taxes...you see?

I'm still waiting for a few folks to push their cars hard to see if this version can take the big boy track days without overheating, limping, or flat out breaking.

It's surprisingly difficult to option one past $54k.
Metallic paint and a premium package(all the options I, personally, could ever want or need) bring it to $46,875. In relative terms that seems fairly reasonable. Add 2-3k for xDrive? And with a little patience an M235i can be had however you want it. Mostly.
I think the N54 and N55's torque delivery is what is responsible for their ever impressive acceleration numbers, again in relative terms.
C&D is just the control in this experiment. It being .4 slower than the E92 M3 and .4 faster than the the 135i is completely acceptable to me.
People are really gonna shit when C&D measures the 228i at ~4.7/8.
What a blessed time for automobiles we live in.

I think they like it.
100% of the old M3's performance (more like 85%, but who's counting), 2/3rds the price, 150% of the sex appeal of the F8X. WTB F80 M3 with M235i bumper and headlights.

Very nice numbers. I have to admit I'm not surprised it broke 12's with the ZF.

Not to compare apples to oranges but in the early 2000's camaro ss with 320hp and around 3400lbs ran 12.9-13.0 all day. So yeah I'm on board with the M235i! Can't wait for the M2.

If they got an E93 M3 from 0-60 in 4.6 (when it's actually around 5.0), then this hits it in 4.7. Still quite respectable but I wish it were lighter.

Let us pray....

The potential of the M2 has me completely off the M4 bandwagon. I even changed my avatar.
Lets hope that they do limit production and create another halo car, that can hold its second hand value like no other BMW. Get your order in now to make sure that you get one and i hope they limit it to 450 in UK as they did with the 1M.
Not bothered by M2 will be a true successor to e30 M3 just make the M2 a worthy successor to the 1M and the job is done.

I'm more anxious on the M2 now than the F8x M3/M4. As a simple tuned N55 T0, i'm also willing to bet better gas mileage than it's bigger brother with at least 95% of it's performance out of the box.

Agreed, I have driven slower cars that are much more fun, and very powerful cars that are little boring. Numbers doesn't really reflect on how the car feels while you are behind the wheel.

Guess I just have to come to the fact that the M3 is aging technology...it hurts but it's evolution!

Don't forget the M Performance parts that are available.

I'd have a hard time ordering a M235i without the LSD, and that's $3K right there.

I think we are seeing the handwriting on the wall regarding transmission development. DCTs are fantastic transmissions, especially for race applications, and will be the obvious choice for Ferrari's, GT3s, and probably M3/4. But the ZF 8 speed is really an absolute marvel of design for single clutch automatics. I still much prefer a manual transmission in my sports car, but my wife's F30 335i with the 8 speed sport automatic is truly fantastic for daily driving and for the occasional run through the twisties. It is much smoother in auto mode than previous dct versions (I have not driven the newest dct that BMW offers), and is very quick to respond to up/downshifts, especially in Sport+ mode.

The proof of just how great this transmission is may very well be confirmed by Chevrolet. They are developing this transmission for the Z06 spec C7 vette, claiming it will perform on par with Porsche's PDK, which is one of the best dct available. If it can hold up to the 625/625+ power over time (which will surely be a 3s/11s or better performer), the industry may very well ask if the much more expensive to manufacture dct is even necessary.
