Most importantly I want to know about pricing. Can we use the F30 to G20 as a comp for pricing? This is from C&D: Pricing for the 2019 330i is the same as the 2018 model at $41,245, while the 2020 M340i starts at $54,995, roughly $2500 more than the old 340i equipped with the Track Handling package and summer tires. Adding xDrive to either model ups the tab by $2000. https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...ummer%20tires.

I agree on pricing, it really should remain the same except inflation adjustments (which honestly might be massive when everything that happened last year sinks in). The car is being made in Mexico and not Germany which should save on manufacturing costs as well as transportation costs. Additionally it will have very few unique parts with it sharing its platform, engine, and interior with other models, so economies of scale should work here.

Got my 235 in 2014. Still love it, no major issues even though I did many track days with it. Manual. I see no reason to change for a newer one right now, might as well keep it a few more years at this point. Since the pandemic I haven’t put on much mileage either so it’s in great shape.

No vert? No bueno.
Only 40k miles on my F23. Probably won't need replacement in my lifetime anyhow.

I would expect BMW to keep any manufacturing and transportation costs as profit and not pass it on to the consumer. They are a for profit company after all.

All car companies are, I wouldn't expect them to operate at a loss. My post was talking about staving off or reducing a pricing increase. With the 2 series being the step child of dealer lots most of the time, car shortages notwithstanding, I don't think the average consumer could stomach a 5-10% increase in price. TBH it would make me look elsewhere. Making 10% on 10k cars is more lucrative than making 11% on 8k cars.

When the new Z4 came out they already said there would be no new 2 series convertibles so that’s been public knowledge for two years.

the G42 looks nice albeit not a huge change.
I dont really see the need to get it, though it does have the nicer interior too. current m240 is more than enough and perfectly good with it |

The other "hopeful" addition is that the upgraded B58 is going into the next generation. Correct me if I am wrong, but the B58 on the current M240i is the B58B30M0 which produces 335 HP and 369 lb/ft. This variant of the B58 appears to be retired in every other series so I would expect it to not carry over to the 2022 G42. I would expect to see the B58B30O1 that is in the M340i, this engine produces 382 HP with the same 369 lb/ft of torque. This would make it more powerful than any of the non-comp M2s out there while still being able to daily drive in comfort. I'm sure with a tune you could be at M2 comp levels of power if that is really your thing. The potential loss of a manual is a bit upsetting, but that is a losing fight. I have owned manuals my entire life and even took my drivers test in a manual VW Beetle. I love the feeling of rowing the gears and even the sting when you mess up a shift, but modern automatics, if tuned right, are amazing. I prefer a DCT but the ZF tuned by BMW is phenomenal. I race a small formula car in SCCA that has a sequential transmission I shift via paddles, and for street driving the ZF leaves very little for me to want. I think the exterior updates (through camo) look good and will age just as well as the current gen 2-series coupe. If I had an M240i now, that was running well, I wouldn't be that interested. As someone on the outside looking in this is looking like it will be a great car and ordering one later this year makes far more sense than buying a used/CPO LCI M240i. |

Used prices have skyrocketed, one argument in favor of going with new.
The first year of a new model is always a bit dodgy, though. I waited one year, by which time they had straightened out most of the worst kinks. But that means 2023! |

I agree with the reasoning, but with losing my previous daily by being t-boned a month ago I am stretching my patience by trying to wait until NOV/DEC. My last two new cars have both been the first model year of a generation and both have had to go in for "revisions " of certain systems but neither was serious or a deal breaker. I reason that the 2022 G42 will have very few teething issues since basically everything that goes into it has been in production, at the Mexico plant, for years.

I hope you are wrong but I would see the reasoning if BMW did that. I think the main difference between the 335 and 382 HP variants is a different turbo and some different tuning, so not insurmountable in the aftermarket but it certainly would be nice to have that from the factory and within warranty.

The X3 M40i and X4 M40i both produce 382 hp. Perhaps if the model has an M in it (like the M240i will) it will have the 382 hp output?

I think they would kill the V8 option on the X5 and X7 if they went to 382 and they apparently make a lot more money selling the V8 based on the pricing.

I have only 35K miles on my 2017 M240i and an 8 year / 100K extended warranty. I am very happy with this car and plan to keep it until at least January of 2025.
So, if I get a G42, it will likely be an LCI. If the current spy photos are accurate, I'm interested, but cautious. I was planning on replacing it with an M440i LCI via ED, but BMW killed both of those options by putting that hideous nose on the M440i and cancelling ED.

Just riffing here, but with no vert option; could BMW be substituting this redesign as a Z4 coupe? |

I, for one, though, am just not seeing it. To my eye, it looks like the length is more or less the same as the current car. I'll be a little surprised if it's grown more than 1 inch. I suspect that the (mis)perception of a longer snout is the result of a higher, stubbier-looking rear. |

It obviously has a proper sized back seat, as there is an adult sitting in it in the photo.
