I'm pretty sure at sea level the M235i can beat an IS-F or a e92 m3 with some minor upgrades (downpipe, tune, intake) I remembered my friend here in florida with a 335i (n54) not even with the DCT and had a jb4 with downpipe and intake and beat m3, m5, camaros, mustangs 5.0 and even an r8 (V8)

I have to admit that I have judge this 2 series too quickly. Coming from a 2012 135i with active steering and a true DCT tranny this new model just doesn't do it for me. So yeah BMW, this is all nice and why not, but stop messing around with other cars and build an M2 already so I can get one or is it going to be 2M?

It has nothing to do with the Lexus transmission, but more to do with the fact that turbocharged cars lose less power in thin air, when compared to an aspirated one. The outcome would be different if the very same race took place at sea level.

Since there is not much between an ISF and an M3, how do you suppose an M3 would fare against the M235i at altitude?

M3 vs ISF at , or M235i vs a45 Amg, at altitude would be a fair comparison.
The best post i have read so far...

I agree, i could have bet money that if they would have raced an e9X m3, the loss would have been considerably worse since the M3 lacks torque...

The Lexus has a great transmission as a matter of fact... i rented one to go to Luxembourg on a three day weekend from SIXT and let me tell you this car is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.... so refined and forgiving until you mash the throttle.... The IS-F doesn't do the what the M3 can do but what i does it does very well...

Gents, this is a sports sedan that doesn't see the service department for other than schedule maintenance which is something we cant really say about the BMW's ( I have 3 by the way)

For those asking as to why the ISF when you could have bought an M3..? well for one it comes standard already with the things the M3 can as packages that would make you cringe at checkout unless of course you are filthy rich which i am not... and...

Some guys dont like to have their cars 2 months out of the year in the shop... they dont like surprise check engine lights when the car is in their first years of their lives and they dont need to stomp of the gas pedal 24/7

Again... good victory for the 2 series car... but i think the staging of this race was lopsided and biased for one of the cars... i would like to see both cars and their prime under optimal conditions to see who would win... but as BMW owners we dont want to see that... do we..?

Unfair comparison. In the real world turbo cars are tuned since its so easy to increase boost a bit and beat the Lexus by a lot bigger margin. Tuned M235i will be a beast. All N54s and N55s that I know have a tune in the minimum.

Not surprised, even at sea level it will be the same result maybe not by as much , introduce a tune and there won't even be a discussion

E92 M3 would lose to M235i as well in the same scenario at 1 mile up, so what's your point? My M3 was a total dog above 5000 feet. Lots of noise and no power to back it up. Also, what is the point of this comparo? These videos would have been so much better if they were just comparing for the sake of showing how altitude affects NA power. I like TFL videos for the most part, but this one is pretty stupid.

Yeah, same here. I've encountered these guys at a local cars & coffee meet as well. While I was admiring a particular car, they come over, set up a camera, and tell me to get out of their shot so they can give some inaccurate spiel about it.

Also as others have already pointed out, altitude has a significant affect on naturally aspirated motors.

I'm sorry, but you need to speak for yourself. As far as the E9x M3 is concerned, it's one of the MOST reliable cars BMW has built in recent years in their entire range. I've had mine from 57k miles to almost 79k miles now (127000km) and all it has needed in that time was a throttle valve actuator, which I bought for $800 and replaced in under half a day. I've looked up service records from the previous owner and it has never been to the dealership other than for regular scheduled maintenance (aka fluids) in the first 4 YEARS.

So I'm not sure where you come up with the car being in service for 2 months at a time, but you shouldn't make blanket statements like that.

What tools. That makes me dislike them even more actually. I've yet to watch a single video from those idiots and felt like it was worth my time and I learned something new. Would love to forward our feedback to them haha.

At least the Everyday Driver guys seem like they are friendly (I could be wrong of course).

I am speaking for my self and definitely sharing my experience with MY BMW's... The one that has been the biggest pain in my ass has been the 335i.... and yes it has been in the shop longer than any other car i have ever own combined... No, it has not been moded and it is bone stock... so if you want to put BMW and Reliability in the same sentence, speak for yourself champ because i live in Germany and i see first hand which brands holds the longest and which brands are always on the side of the road waiting for ADAC to come and rescue them... Maybe you have one of the odd cars that rarely develops a problem... or maybe just more BS like every other hot head BMW owner that thinks they own the Chariot of the Gods like i tend to think at times....

good for you..! Keep in mind that the "Service Records" will show only what BMW has done to the car and not anything an INDY or Tuner shop maybe have done...

i have had a 335i, 118d, 320d...

335i @ 28k Miles - HPFP Failure which by the way second one is on the way out...
335i @ 33K Miles - brake pad sensors kept getting replace and kept coming back...
335I @ 50K miles - misfire galore... not fixed yet had it walnut blasted but problems was not gone 100 percent...

335i @ 60K Miles turbo rattle.... Turbos replaced with same part number... so i am expecting it to come back...
335i all the TIME the stupid angle light bulb keeps dying...! WTF!!! i no longer pay attention to this one by the way...

This only a small sample

320D its biggest problems is both electrical and brakes... Christ the dealer CANNOT fix the shimmy on this one..!

118d@ oil buildup in the head and intake ,,,, there is no fix for this one by the way... just have to take it in for cleaning and a new FMIC

all of them have developed problems within the first year of use... I own BMWs because i like them and because i can afford the maintenance....
you can roll your eyes all you want but the fact of the matter is that MY experience with THREE BMW's not just ONE, has been the same... one nagging problem one after the other.......

and that sir probably makes you the exception and not the rule....

That is not to mention the other cars of owners i know... so congratulations on your unbreakable beast..! Tell me who your Shaman is so i can take my upcoming x25 to it....

By the way keep an eye on your timing chain if you plan to high rev... if it skips, you wont survive the damage...!
