6 speed, but thinking about switching to an auto. M135i forums are pretty much split on which is more fun. Seeing as how 8 speed is a "free" option, it really takes dedication to stick with the same old manual when the value proposition has long disappeared.

We bought our 14 235i two weeks ago with the auto 8 speed and now we are ordering our second 235i via ED and I'm torn about getting another auto or the 6 speed manual.
what say you all?

The power delivery will be different. I just drove for the second time an eight speed auto and it's fantastic, I then jumped into my 335 with PPK and it's a six speed auto and the delivery is definitely different. The 8 spd is short burst of power with a shift in between. The 6 spd is a longer more drawn out delivery of thrust. The 6 speed feels more powerfull but the are equally as quick. If that makes any sense.
I think the manual and the 8 spd will be similar to the story above. The manual will feel more powerful but the 8 spd will be quicker. This is a bit of a turbo phenomenon. Turbos love load. I found if I short shifted the auto it felt more powerful.

I have always been a firm believer that a manual box in a sporty car is best. When avoidable I have always opted for the manual in my "Sporty Cars". When I test drove the m235i with the auto I was BLOWN AWAY. That gear box is amazing. I still went for the manual but I considered it for about 2 seconds. (That's a life time for me). I wish I could get 8 speed auto in my 1993 range rover that I use for 4-wheeling. It would be sweet. Oh well I guess I am stuck with the zf 4 speed in there. All I can say is that the zf 8 speed is 10 times better than any auto I have ever seen. It alone may be the death of the manual box.
Has any ones dealer had a 6-speed in stock?? |

Auto. Fiancé can't drive stick and don't feel like letting her ruin a German tranny to figure it out.
Also got a bit tired of it I'm the city on my GTI. It is a really great auto though. Some logic in its brain unlike any other auto I have driven. |

Drove both auto and manual back to back at the dealership. Without question the auto was the better choice. The manual is not as good as it should be in these cars. Go test drive a BRZ manual then test drive BMW manual and you will see what I meant about the shifter feel.
The 8-speed in the M235i gives better low gearing (quicker off the line), launch control (not used often), better HWY mileage on long trips, and sounds really good in Sport mode during the downshifts. The manual feels a bit notchy and sloppy when compared to manuals in other sports cars. IMO. |

I didn't have a chance to drive the manual but the auto felt really nice. Plus my wife can't drive a stick and I figured the first time she needed to drive my car and couldn't I would never hear the end of it.

I honestly have no idea what are you talking about. I drove both 335i and M235i and manuals in both cars were absolutely perfect: short-throw (but not too short) and rifle-bolt precise.
