Potential new owner questions

I'm looking at a 2015 235i and I noticed something odd. Probably a dumb question but here it goes. The car is white and the front spoiler is black and the rear diffuser is white? Every other M235 I've seen has had either the rear black/front white or both white. Is this something the previous owner had to have done or did they come this way from the factory?

probably mods.

My 2016 AW M235IX has white front spoiler, gray rear valence.

I really dislike the rear valence and its getting replaced with the M performance valence and Dinan exhaust I am getting from a friend who no longer has his 235. The valence is now red so it will have to be painted.

probably.

I am taking off the Pirelli P7 RFs in spring and putting on Michelin AS 3 plus all seasons.

ps I hate RFs.

this was a friend of mine's car. He is giving me his M perfomance valemce and Dinan exhaust. This is what I am doing to mine except, obviously painted white.

I really dislike the gray rear valence. Saw a black M235 yesterday with the M pref. valence and it look much better,

He had them painted, probably broke the front lip, replaced it unpainted.

The front lips brake easily since the car is very low even without springs. Im on my 5th one, also a 2015.

OK, next question. The car is being delivered this week. I don't have the details on the carmax warranty but do you think it would be a wise decision to get one? I'm use to driving Japanese cars that are reliable and don't need warranties. The car has 13 months left on the BMW warranty. Lets say that I can get a 6 year warranty from CarMax for $3k, does it make sense or should I roll the dice?

Give the same money, probably less, to a BMW dealer to certify it. You can have them CPO the car anytime before the original lapses due to time or miles. If you plan to mod (Dinan or otherwise) get the CPO done first since the car must be stock to go through that process.

That way you are dealing with BMW dealer for everything vs. 3rd party warranty. You can also have maintenance included if you want.

What confuses me about a BMW warranty is that it comes with a 4 year warranty but if you get their 6 year warranty you are just adding 2 years to the original warranty. With the Carmax warranty you are actually getting another 6 years.

Oh I misread your message I thought it was 6 total just like BMW. I'd still try to have the car covered by BMW for as long as possible then go aftermarket when that's no longer an option, but that's just me.

That's if the car passes BMW CPO inspection.

Well that goes without saying. If it doesn't pass then you'd have to pay for it to be fixed first.

is it a warranty or also maint. package from Car Max ? I would think you could spend 3K in 6 years on a BMW. I would be more concerned with the electronics than the mechanicals in 6 years. Check the fine print.

Agreed, I hate to see OP skip the Carmax warranty and try for CPO then find out the car has been modded, wrong tires etc.

And unfortunately last I checked Carmax does not allow PPI. With that in mind I'd probably go the CarMax warranty route too.

Unless - don't they do one week no questions returns? In that case I'd get to dealer for a post purchase inspection within that timeframe. One hour of shop time is cheap insurance.

I bought a carmax warranty on my last BMW and it paid for its self. Ended up with a blown head gasket on a n54 335i

Carmax has a pretty good reputation for their warranty, at least in the past anyway.

Carmax still has an excellent reputation, I purchased a 2014 Focus with only 13k miles for the step daughter in 2016 and added the MaxCare warranty. Car was in near new condition but several pesky engine problems came up within 6 months of purchase, the big one was a blown water pump. All repair work was done at a Ford dealership and completely covered by the CarMax warranty, it was a complete no hassle transaction each time the car went to the shop. No issues since the last repair, original warranty cost has already paid for itself and the car is still covered till 2021 and is transferable to new owner if she decides to trade up.

OK, the car from Carmax didn't work out. It had some title issues that were going to take 4-6 weeks to take care of. So I've decided to go with a 2015 235ix with 22k miles. The warranty gets me to 2020 but it has no service plan. With 22k miles do you think it's worth it to get a 1 year service plan for $700? It hasn't had the brakes replaced and I'll probably put 8-9k miles on it over the next year. Thoughts?

Do the math. If they did an oil and filter service before you take delivery you know you'll need an oil and filter change in 10K miles or one year - ($180 +or-). Regarding brakes, I'd have them check pad wear to get an idea if you'll need brakes by 35K miles or not. If the first 22K miles were mostly highway or if the PO was easy on brakes, you may not need them at 30-35K miles, unless you know you'll be hard on the brakes. With all my vehicles over the years, I have never gone <40K between brake jobs.

Oil changed at 19,200 miles. It now has 22,500 so probably one oil change in the next year. I'll ask about the brakes.
