Whining/ Low frequency whistle sound while driving 0-40 and around 1.5K RPM

Hello All,

I am pretty sure I read about this whining noise somewhere in this forum but couldn't spot the thread.

I have a 2016 228 and while driving quietly around the compound or sometimes even on the road, I hear a loud whining/ whistle noise relative to the RPM.

Doesn't come when accelerating. The sound comes down as the car slows and vanishes when comes to rest. It doesn't sound bad but not good either.

I tried switching the AC and Radio OFF but can hear the sound. It was a bit loud yesterday.

Is this something to do with turbo engine ? Am I just being too paranoid for normal engine sound ?

Anyone else hear this?

I tried taking it to the dealer and OBVIOUSLY they couldn't hear anything.

I've only ever heard the merry whistle of the turbo when accelerating, not when slowing down. It doesn't sound like the turbo to me.

Probably just the turbo. It spools down as well as up. Ive always thought it sounded more prominent lifting off the gas than giving it the gas, but maybe thats just me Would make sense being able to hear it more off gas as engine rpm/noise drops.

MEBII BarryJI moldcad My initial assumption was the turbo whine.

Yesterday I carefully tried to repeat the sound. It looks like it only hums/ whines when the AC is on.

Does this trigger something else to you guys ?

allthatisntnow Yes, that was the thread. Thanks for digging it up.

I through several answers and started to convince that it could be the Turbo whine.

Yesterday upon close examination, I noticed it's only coming when AC is on. Anything else you want to suggest ?

Actually I did hear my turbo unwind when I lifted off the gas yesterday after I had pushed the car hard up a hill, so I might have to reconsider my response.

I've decided that this sound is the air moving through the ducting and out the vents--AC on or off. It's only perceptible to me with the radio off and everything else quiet.

F2x and F3x cars have an issue with a high-pitched noise coming from the center A/C vents which can be difficult to duplicate. Ask your dealer to refer to SI B64 09 15. They need to install a parts kit.
