I know the AT had better performance and MPG numbers, but I had to have the MT.

Tranny choices

My handle says it all. Had a C63, am and an Audi S5 cab. Got tired of playing "video games" with alphabet trannies! The 2 series MT is "butta", as good as any I have driven. The only vert MT in the state of Florida. Shame on BMW and the dealers.

I took driving lessons in my dad's 1958 Volkswagen micro bus. It had a 4-speed manual transmission, and no syncro on 1st gear. I learned to double-clutch when I was 15 and a half. Ha!

Next, came my dad's Crosley sports car. 3-speed manual with NO syncros on any gear. At this point of my short driving career, I REALLY learned how to double-clutch.

My first car had a 4-speed manual. In fact all of my cars after that had manual transmissions. Only the family vehicles eventually had automatics, most of which I actually liked.

But now, due to weakening knees and all, I thoroughly enjoy the 8-speed auto in my M235i and the 7-speed auto in my Mercedes-Benz GLK350. Both trannies are excellent.

So my question to all of you nay-sayers, what is wrong with that? Not to mention that my automatic M235i will take your manual M235i.

Sure, rowing gearing is fun, and if that's your deal, fine. But please stop trashing other folks choice. Row your gears and have fun, but please stop pissing on automatics -they are actually pretty good. Just wait until your f**king knees go bad and then, perhaps, you will understand.

AT because I need xDrive where I live (midwest).

It is a beast though, shifts fast and hard when you have it in sport mode.

AT. My first AT BMW and no regrets. Faster than MT. Also MT is so so 20th century tech.

AT because wife's previous 6MT 128i convertible made her drive home in traffic (Wilmington, NC bridge-crossing and causeway to Brunswick Co. where we live) very uncomfortable. Previously lived in TX where traffic wasn't so much of a consideration. Also, the loaded 228i M-Sport convertible we bought was on the showroom floor - no ordering/waiting, and got $4K+ off the sticker price. Easy decision.

When spec'ing my car I joked that this was a big reason why I got a manual as well; however, practically speaking there have been a handful of times in which it would have been convenient for her to use my car, so this may end up being my first and only DD with a manual (I hope to be in a position to have a second car for myself some day that does have a manual).

Having this be my first car with a manual made our ED experience last year very interesting, as my wife and I had a ~4-hour drive to Wiesbaden right after we picked up the car; we had a few stalling-related scares, but the memories are distant enough now that I recall them with some fondness.

AT because my city ran out of MT allocations and if I wanted MT, it would've meant getting a 2017 model (or m235i), which means more a lot more money and much higher finance rate

It's all most dealers stock. My dealer thought I was nuts to pay A LOT more and order my 6mt M235 with moonroof delete rather than take my pick of 8 loaded M235x's on the lot for $8 to 9k off. My salesman, a true car guy, completely understood why I ordered the car the way I did and there's no dohbt in his mind and mine that the car will be far more desirable when it comes to selling it in 4 to 6 years.

With that said, apparently I'm one of the few with a wife that can drive a manual. Hell, most of us in high school back in the late 1980s/early 1990s had manuals. She loves driving my car. God bless her. My kids love the car too and their dad is the only one to drive a car with a manual.

I don't fault anyone getting this car with an auto though. The 8at is a really good and if this were a more dedicated track car where I'm racing for points and money, I'd definitely have the auto.
