Trunk mount Bike Rack
Hi,
Anyone use a trunk mount Bike Rack with their 2-er?? I am talking about the one which mounts on the trunk using straps and hooks which hook on to the edges of the trunk lid. I want to take 2 bikes on it and was wondering if anyone used it on their 2-er. Thanks! |

I'd be worried about scratching the car...those things are never super secure. I got a hitch installed on mine specifically for carrying bikes and I'm sure happy with it.

I have used them before and as long they are tight, they are ok. I just wasnt sure if it would cause a dent or screw up the hinges or something because of the weight.

I don't like trunk racks, scratched up my S2000 trunk lid and bikes never felt as secure as they do on a roof rack or hitch. The X3 is my bike carrier using a hitch rack.

I use the Thule archway. I position it so the pads on the upper arm rest on the back glass, and the lower pads rest on the license plate. No scratches so far, and have been on a few 6+ hour trips. The car is usually pretty clean before putting it on.
I found I was putting far more scratches on my bumper putting the bike in, and taking it out of the trunk. I have a super light road bike, but one of the pedals put a nice gash into the plastic bumper which drove me and my detailer crazy. I had the Thule roof racks on my e90 330. Looked and worked incredibly well, but the wind noise - even with the aero bars - was extremely annoying. |

I use a Yakima MegaJoe Elite 3-Bike Trunk Rack which I picked up from pricepoint before they closed shop. I still remove the front wheel to travel. I believe it shows up as SuperJoe in their fitment guide.

This what I have installed on my 2 series and works. The rake is a long term investment and only $300.00

It will scratch your paint at the rubber pad contact points. If you want to use it without the paint damage you'll have to be very clever about how to prevent that, but it's possible. I think that problem exists with all such bike racks. The new model of this rack has a design flaw that can cause a bike to end up dangling by one arm if a certain bit of plastic break. Try to buy a used one that looks exactly like the pic. BMW makes a rack for the e36. The e36 has two little covers on rear bumper whereas my 228i has only one. The attachment points for the bike rack are under those covers.

I have a Yakima King Joe pro 3. Even though it's a great rack in its own right and very sturdy,it's a pain to wedge those hooks around the trunk tight shut lines. And yes, as mentioned before, the top pad WILL scratch your trunk. I use a terry rag under the pad to protect the paint. I am not a big fan of trunk racks, and much prefer putting my mountain bike in the trunk instead.
I think I will definitely end up getting a roof rack. |
