Curbed my orbit grey rim!!!!!!!! :(:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Whenever I get a new car something always happens within the first month of ownership. This is the first time that it's been my fault. I stopped by an ATM and the lanes at the bank are ridiculously narrow. I thought I cleared it and I was paying attention to the left side since I was turning left as I left. Hit the right side.

So many tears. Car is barely 2 weeks old. Two scuff marks on the rear passenger wheel. Small though. I can deal with it, but still sucks ass.

Rim repair is always an option...but then it'll happen again and you'll be sad again. I did the same thing early on - found a perfect parking spot but had to rush in to steal it, pulled in head in too quick and sliced up both wheels.

Haha, that's the first thing I thought. And then I thought that this will be a good reason to get new wheels. Clearly that tiny scuff has now thrown off the balance of the wheel which will lead to uneven tire wear which will lead to a wreck which will lead to a fiery inferno. I can't have that happen. I have a family to take care of.

I feel your pain. I went about 7 months with no curb rash. Then one day, I was getting ready to parallel park near the bottom of a hill and in my rear view mirror I noticed a guy on a skateboard barreling downhill like a maniac. To avoid him, I rushed the parking job and... BAM... curb rash on one rim. I sanded the spot down and bought BMW's (crappy) touch-up paint. It still bugs me.

Yeah, I thought about trying to use some touch-up paint too, but I've never been too successful with that. I'd rather have the rash than an ugly paint blob.

Mine is getting fixed by the dealer's wheel repair guy for a small nominal fee, think like $20. May be worth asking.

Get it fixed by a proper wheel place and you'll never know it happened.

That is what I did. Very interesting side note my BBS CH-Rs have a replaceable steel protector. If you get curb rash, you just buy a new protector and it is all fixed.

If you lived further north, I'd say you now have your winter rims for snow tires and go buy your favorite three-season set!

I know the feeling all to well. But $20 for repair?! Man in my area its $100 per wheel average for just a small scratch. I had just bought my 370z Nismo (where I work you parallel park all the time) and the wide "hips" of the Z didn't allow me to see how far or close to the curb I was. Thank goodness the M235i mirror tilts down when in reverse.

I hear ya. I called around a few places in San Francisco, and was quoted $150-$200. Hated to waste money like that when I could buy an unblemished used wheel on ebay for not too much more that.

Yea, it was about $150/wheel when I got my Lexus done.

OP - I'd be mindful of repairs. Some places will respray the wheel without a 100% color match. Happened to 2 of my buddies...

Feel your pain.
I also got a bit too close to a curb a few months ago, but it was a small area and not deep.
I decided to repair it myself and ordered the correct touch-up (BMW B55 Ferric Grey II) from Quik-Touch (url below) for $9.99
I used fine grit metal sandpaper (180 - 220) to smooth the scatches and the BMW B55 touch-up from Quik-Touch was a perfect color match.
Now I have to look very closely to see where it had been repaired.

You guys jogged my memory on the pricing. I threw a shit fit last fall all of my rims were bent and needed repair and the guy wouldn't cut me a deal. Instead of fighting too much on that he agrees to fix all my curb rash of i covered the cost of the paint which he said was like $20 as part of a package deal. Seems like I got off cheap for $100 per for bends then paint for just $20.

The sucky part is that BMW doesn't even have the 18 x 8.5 orbit grey wheel for ordering. So repair is your only option!

I just recently got a small bit of curb rash on my rim. I was sad, but $140 later from a wheel repair specialist and it looks fantastic. The paint match/blending is great, looks 99% good as new.

I'll tell you what, guys (not trolling!). Do you know when I started worrying about every curb rush on my wheels (which frankly are unavoidable in normal city traffic)? When the dark-painted alloys became fashionable, and I'm not talking black (I hate them and never use), but those dark grafit or gunmetal ones... It's enough to slightly rush them, and the natural bright alloy color gets exposed, screaming out loud because of the contrast...

I remember my old good E46 330i I had for 10 years; they were bright silver as this was the fashionable color those days. Of course, during the 10 years I scratched them plenty of times - but never ever cared to repair them! The scratches were simply difficult to see from more than 2-meter distance, and didn't bother me at all. Of course my first several curb rushes were painful when I thought of them, so I just tried not to.

Now - with those "Orbit Gray" and other variations of darker wheels - every little scratch screams out so loud that I just can't imagine leaving them like this, so I have repaired every single one (had 3 already). But while repairing them, I always had this feeling of doing a Sisyphean task...

Do you agree there is something to it? Of course another important reason of curbing our wheels in current models much more often than in a 2002 E46 is the ultra low profile tires we're using - the ones on my 330i were modest 225/45 R17...

Can you believe none of the wheels in this E46 were ever repaired, and all of them had many scratches?

Where's your dealer? All the dealers around here run in the $150 - $175 range, and all of them are using the same subcontractor in a mobile van. Granted, the repairs are great, but $20 is a heck of a price.
