I didn't see that on the std options list for my build. Did I miss it? Is it an option you must choose or for hot weather climates only? I will look over it again later

That is 100% totally normal on any car. I don't think I know a car where the back windows are not darker than the front. Look at the truck your parked beside in your pics and the Subi in the background. They both come from the factory like that and it is not an option...it is standard factory tint. It keeps heat down a little bit in the car but does not mess with the drivers night time view

As someone else said, most auto glass is not 100% clear. Most cars come with a light tint embedded in the glass (sometimes sandwiched between the layers in safety glass).

The front windows also pick up more interior light as there is more light behind them from the windshield and larger glass on the opposite side. The rear glass is smaller and typically in front of the darker rear seat area, picking up less light and giving the illusion of it being darker.

Still, the OP is right. From his pic angles, it does appear that the rear windows are darker than the front. It wouldn't surprise me, but I hadn't noticed it before.

FYI...I got my car lightly-tinted with 3M ceramic tint at a *fantastic* place in LA. Did it a bit for cosmetics but mostly for the cooling effect. I'm very happy with the results and the car is much cooler, which is good as it's been in the 100's this week. Highly recommend doing this to help insulate the car and preserve the interior from sun damage.

I agree that auto glass is not usually 100% clear, but my 228i's glass definitely appears to be darker than my E90 328i's glass. This seems to be true even for the front side windows. I haven't had a chance to take pictures to verify, though.

Before I got the car, I was definitely planning to do light tint all around for the UV protection and heat rejection (not interested in darkening). I'm still thinking I'll probably do something, but I'd really like to know what the qualities of the factory glass are so I avoid doing any unnecessary tinting.

This is very interesting. This option was definitely not offered to me when I built my car online nor when my CA went over all the options with me. You mentioning this made me wonder if BMW just started to include this in the standard features, so, I messaged my CA this morning to find out whether my car has "Sun Protection Glazing". He responded, "I believe it has privacy glass standard...But I will double check today. It's like a light factory tint."

I may also give BMW USA customer service a call and see if they can shed any light (no pun intended ).

Meanwhile, I'd love to see more pictures of what a 2 Series looks like before tinting. I'm curious if cars earlier in the 2014 MY had lighter glass.

I can't believe I didn't notice this yesterday, but apparently all my window glass, except for the windshield, is Saint Gobain Sekurit.

I attached a photo showing what type of glass is on each window.

Does everyone have the same thing?

tjis all is very interesting, my front side windiws are tinted very slightly but obviously, while rear windows are tinted slightly more, can't see any tint film on both. maybe thos is how this glass is?

I just want to know if every 2 Series has the same glass or not. Some people claim their 2 Series didn't come with tinted/privacy glass. I'm curious if BMW changed the glass during the 2014 model year.

Cool, thanks. Now if someone who got their car earlier in the year comments, maybe we'll find out if there has been a change. @HX_Guy perhaps?

You know now that I think about it a lot of cars come with some kind of UV limiting auto glass now so that is prolly what we are seeing and it presents itself differently depending on the light intensity, angle of photo, etc......sometimes it looked tinted and sometimes it did not
I remember my F-250 & Sonata SE had it......

Does the information printed on your glass match mine or is it different? (see the photo I posted above)

Thanks.

My Mineral Gray has a light tint to the windows as well. When I first picked it up my friends even asked me if I got it tinted. I looking at my VIN to see if I had the before mentioned 420 option I didn't, but I do have this option: S823A -
Hot-climate version. Anyone know if that gives a darker tint to the windows or what it actually is?

It doesn't. S823A is a special coding for vehicles that are sold in countries that have "hotter" climate. It just increases the amount of A/C that blows through the center vent. People in countries with "colder" climate can code for it.

Wait what? Can you expand on this? Phoenix, AZ counts as a "hotter" climate.

I really can't. It's just something I found on the forums. I believe cars destined for the US have it already.
