I really don't get this type of thinking. Unless you are completely awful at driving this wouldn't be remotely dangerous.

There are a ton of cars much slower than this that are common cars even in america. A Nissan versa is maybe 10 seconds to 60 or a yaris or something like that

Doesn't make sense to me previous 18i had 170hp. Who would buy this 136hp 3cyl over the 189hp 220i?

Maybe on paper but on day to day driving I seriously doubt that there will be a significative difference. F20 18i had 170ps is that a sight of BMW's future they are now going backward?

Seriously?
read the forums and you will see all the evidence you can ask for.
Read reviews about the F chassis interior, handling and overall feel.
Ask 1 owners how they feel about FWD
etc....

Well, maybe "dangerous" was a bit of an overstatement. How about "scary"? Despite the fact that a lot of people do it, I do find the thought of getting on a freeway in a Yaris or a Versa scary and it has nothing to do with my driving skills. It has everything to do with the driving skills of others who are doing 80mph while I'm trying to get up to speed in a Versa.

What this is the new engine for the 2 series in March 2015, but not for America only for the rest of the world.

This model will be Europe only it also allows first time BMW customers entry to the BMW brand via the more sporting 2er if differing priorities do not require the 1er.
The engine introduction also extends the lead of BMW models that meet and exceed legislative targets, therefore they also save money by not paying fines.
This is BMW adapting to the issues at need and the market itself as premium compact cars are decimating volume compact cars within Europe therefore increasing sales and market share for the premium segment.
This introduction will be further proof of that.

I doubt you'll see anything smaller than a 228i anywhere in North America (Mexico excepted).

Why this model is call a 18i? With that kind of power figures it is much closer to the 16i level.

mexico is a pretty huge exception when referring to NA! if they bring it to mexico it wouldn't be as much of a stretch for them to bring it us and our hat (canada). i'd like to see how the diesel does if they bring it here, which they probably will. 220d xdrive in a manual (i wish)...yum.

From what I've heard, the 328d is limited allocation, but they are selling, at least in this area.

The 4 cyl is heavier and the sound is totaly different.
But why BMW are not going to relase the full power 3 cyl to all cars.
  • Gread sound (Not far away from 6 cyl) and with active sound (I know it's fake one), and yes this engine can have the same sound that i8 already have !
  • 231 hp and 320 nm
  • 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 MPH) may be arround 6.5s

Pure fun and power for economic price. What else ?

I don't understand all the animosity about this entry level car. It's an entry level. If you want more power get the 4 or the 6 cylinder turbo or get the M2. It's simple. How does this alienate the base?

Wow lots of fun reactions based on ignorant information.

For those with a bad taste in their mouth:

1: You realize the chances of this car coming to the US are slim to none.

2: You realize BMW has been selling cars with tiny engines in Europe forever.

3: You act as if whiny guys on internet forums who complain about the rust underneath their seats is a representative of an actual demographic.

My co-worker in London drives as 116D with a whopping 115hp - and he loves it.

Don't act like BMW is diluting your brand when you forget it's a European company who is serving a worldwide market.

Hilarious to read this, succinctly put. We still have options and to those complaining then vote with your wallet by choosing from the current lineup.
