Lightbulb Who will pit the M235 vs M3/M4

Who will be the first to pit the M235 against an M3/M4. Actual street driving and not spec-sheet comparison.

This could determine if an M2 makes any sense at all.

I would not be suprised at all if a 235 with upgraded wheels, tires, suspenion and bolt ons runs faster around the track than the new M

That's the key: "with upgraded wheels, tires, suspenion and bolt ons". If by "bolt-ons" you mean the LSD, then that's pretty much what the definition of an M2 will be. Well, plus a power upgrade.

But either way, I would be skeptical the M235i would be as fast as an M4 around the track without a significant power upgrade.

Yea there's no way an M235i is touching an M4 around a track without a power upgrade. Both cars stock are the same weight more or less and the M4 has a 80hp/70tq advantage.

Face it, with the deliveries of the new M3/M4 now taking place. Our M235i 15 minutes of fame is now over. A new BMW king is in town! We are just the little brother that tries to follow his older brother around.

Indeed.

The M2 is going to piss off a LOT of old guard M3/4 cats. The 235 is already a pretty badass little car in terms of power, brakes and handling. It's kicking ass all over the press and with its new owners, though the grumpy ones out there only want to talk about the unearned "M" badges. Whatever.

Add 50-75 more hp, drop it a bit, firm up the body roll and insert an LSD and this mother is going to smoke a lot of things around a track.

The 911 has been the holy grail for Porsche for years. Many feel that the Cayman is a better handling car than the 911 but just lacks the hp to really compete. Folks seem to feel that Porsche intentionally under powers the Cayman to keep the "little brother" from getting too close to the hallowed 911.

In my opinion, the M3/M4 is the equivalent to BMW. The masthead vehicle for the brand.
I wonder if the M2 will be the best BMW can do in that size, or whether they will intentionally prevent it from getting too close to the pedestal that the M3/M4 sit on?

The 2 series is an amazing platform and the only thing in that size. I am praying BMW doesn't mess it up. On top of your wish list, they need to drop the weight, give it more analog sound, a quicker steering rack and allow you to get it with the lightest, lowest manual seats, no idrive, fixed M suspension and then it will be a track monster. Obi-Wan-M2 you are the last hope! BMW, there is a niche for a raw track car, don't mess it up, many of us are holding our breath!

I do in fact like the M3 but I keep looking at the 2 dimensions and I see a diamond covered in fried breading. I hope they sell a lean grilled version and it will beat the M3 on tighter courses where HP is less relevant.

hell, its more like a 130 HP difference now that we know BMW underrated the shit out of the car. In a straight line, I don't think the M235i is gonna be able to stay close with the M3/M4 now an upgraded turbo

These two should not be compared, end of story.

You're going to have to wait for the M2. Even then, don't expect it to be the all-mighty M car in BMW's lineup. Don't get me wrong, it's going to be fast as hell, very fun and may very well come close to an M3/M4, but it ends there.

You'll still see eps, iDrive, electric seats, etc. I would also guess an 80-100lb weight savings, I will be shocked if it's any more than that.

X2 - assuming that is also one's daily driver

Track only car? Sure (though there are much better alternatives for that kind of money).

I'm sure you will be able to get a bloated version of it, no harm no foul. My wish is that they allow you to get it with manual seats, no idrive, etc. Presently, we do not get that option anymore. The M235i in the USA is only offered with all of that stuff so those of you that want it can always get it. I just want BMW to make it optional on the M2.

It's not a track car per se, its a more raw experience as the M2 should be. That is what made the 1M so cool, it's thrilling and stimulates all your senses. The manual seats are lighter and sit lower so you can get in with a helmet. They also slide forward quickly so you can get people in the back seat quickly. The 1M had awesome analog sound with a N54 motor, they should be able to reproduce that without digital sound. It's a daily driver that won't put you sleep on a long drive.

I'm pulling for BMW to create two versions of the M2. The current dialed up packages that M3/M4 has, and a CSL version for the racers. Remove all the extra electronic add ins (even an AC/Radio option), put in manual Recaro seats, CF hood, roof, and trunk on the regular M2 and you will have true factory track weapon.

Want to see a rear trunk badge that reads, "M2 CSL"

You guys who want decontented BMWs are barking uo the wrong tree. It will never happen. There is no real demand in the US. Remember the M3 LTW? Sat on dealer lots. A deontented car has to be hand built off the assembly line. Look how much extra the Racer costs and it has no more power. M2 will be fully loaded. BMW sells luxury sport not hard core sport.

I said STREET and not TRACK driving. Also the focus always downgrades to spec-sheet when that has little to do with actual performance down a neighborhood turn. Fact in point: my friends Stingray could not turn a curve as fast as I was; we tried several times but his larger car with a Z51 suspension just could not do it.

Problem is the options like electric seats and adaptive suspention are always a lot more expensive if you add them as an option rather than have them on the car as standard, but I guess they could offer a sports package that removes them all, but how much weight would it really save?

They already have this. The M235i Racing.

More like a favorite cousin would be fair. The real little brother will be spawned next year
