do you get the flag up on the dash to indicate launch control is active?

I noticed on the bimmercode app that there is an option to enable LC. but I ignored it as I have the 6MT and didnt think it was on the car.

I'll go check it out over the weekend to see if it can be coded.

I do not get the flags. There actually is no indication that the system is active, aside from the rpms holding at 3k while full throttle. Cool thing I noticed is that it doesn?t bounce intermittently either at 3k like some other systems I?ve seen.

Just tried this.
Works on my 235i 2014MY.

Accelerator full down and revs held at 3.5k.

Off we go traction control lights flashing away. Lost concentration and forgot to change from 2nd to 3rdbefore the redline and the car pulled back automatic to avoid over revving.

Was up to 60mph faster than I thought in 2nd gear.

Will give it another go to properly confirm tommorrow ?

Anyone know if this will work on a 6mt 228i? I notice that most of you have m235/m240's. Of course, I will also try it out for myself when I get the chance.

On the 228, does it hold revs at 3500, or 2000? (earlier post used that number, IIRC?).

So is this confirmed to not work with M240i? I haven't tried it but I will try if I remember next time I have the chance.

I haven’t sent an m240i owner confirm, yet, however I’m thinking it can be coded in based on Bimmercode..

I have a 16 M235i and tried this as well but it worked in comfort, sport, and sport plus.

1st gear, p-brake off, clutch and gas to floor.

it revs up to about 4.5k then stops responding to additional throttle input and settles back down to hold at about 3.1k.

I already checked the codes and it's on by default. I still need to try it, don't have a good spot to try it in my area need to drive a little to get somewhere I can do it.

That was going to be my next try out.... comfort and sport. Not just sport plus.

So thanks for confirming already.

You can test this in your garage, if you wanted to. You don't have to physically move. Just see if you get the lower rev-limit with the clutch depressed. If it does, then you have LC. If not, then you don't.

yeah i can confirm with my 228i that it seems to hold revs in comfort, sport and sport +. So I've never tried this but would i just literally mash the gas, take my foot off the clutch (no feathering). Will this damage the transmission or car?

If you're not much into racing, I suggest you not do it, because yes, you can potentially break things. For one, the 228i comes with a less robust Getrag made 6MT. When launching a car safely, you need to modulate both the throttle and clutch through much of 1st gear. You can't just hold the rpms, dump the clutch, and hammer the gas like this "launch control" setup allows. Doing that could:

1) Cause wheel hop (the tires are spinning and catching, causing a violent movement and drivetrain shock) which could snap a half shaft.

2) The tires could grip instantly, directing all that power to the input shaft of the tranny and snap it.

The best way to launch a car on street tires is with a decent amount of launch rpm (2,500-4,000rpms) and clutch slip where you're getting just a hint of wheelspin. This requires concentration, clutch/engine/tire feel, and a general disregard for clutch longevity. Too much clutch slip will burn the clutch. Too little and you might roast the tires or bog the motor. Wheel hop (bullet 1) or a complete bog (bullet 2) are the worst launch situations. If you ever feel the wheels hopping, push the clutch in immediately, DO NOT stay in it.

I thought all BMW MT had the CDV..? If so, I wouldn't worry so much about breaking anything (and I can't imagine BMW didn't think that through before offering to the general public), although wheel hop might still get the really unfortunate. Still, XutvJet's advice is pretty solid.

Damn eh! Must be only pre 2017 models only. Must be something available in the coding though. Where are the software wizards?

I just had my snow tires installed on Thursday, launch control would have no traction here. Will try it in April of 2018

I have a lot more straight line traction with my Alpin PA4s than I do my MPSS. I can't spin the tires remotely as easily.
