As of yet I do not know the full weight target of the M2. But the new philosophy at BMW M is directed towards more precision through lightweight technology.
The addition of a four cylinder emphasises lightweight as does the six cylinder in the M3/M4.
If they are using the M235 or M3/4 as targets to beat, it shouldn't be too difficult, especially if you lost a decent amount of weight from the switch from an I6 to an I4.

Add in a CFRP roof, more aluminium, maybe lighter wheels? Should be able to make a dent in the portly M235.

reasonable yes, especially with the Vargas turbo upgrade, with bigger ones coming!

it's smooth, it sounds good, it makes good torque and power, and revs well

it's more in sync than an inline 4 (bad torque, harder to make reliable power usually.. laggy turbo)

So if that's out of sync with BMW, i no longer like BMW.

Interview with Dr. Friedrich Nitschke (I think it was around autumn 2013)

What about below the M3 and M4?
"... I have all the components I need: the powertrain, chassis. In the near future you will know. ..."

next Question:

What about a four-cylinder M car?
"Not in the near future. But it's possible. Our engines are modular."

Of course this is no official announcement and the "details" from the car can change at this development stage, but I clearly read there will be a 6cyl. M2 in these lines.

Scott says something different, only time will tell...

Here's my $.02:

If SCOTT works with BMW and clearly does some marketing on here...he could be telling us the M2 will have a 4 banger so that sales on the M235i go up with the 6 cylinder.

Although, it would make sense to have a 4 banger in order to reduce weight and have the lineup look like: M2 (4cyl), M4 (6cyl), M5 (8cyl).

At any rate, I won't believe anything till it's official.

Only time will tell...

The answer confirms that "Near Future" is also "Not tomorrow" which is what I have said.

Quick question for you; Are you 100% certain the M2 will have a 4 cylinder?

The JuiceBox is not a tune.
It is a piggyback that does nothing other than send false signals to the ECU/DME. Fooling BMW's ECU to overstate itself and run more horsepower.

Terry Burger relies 100% of BMW's fail-safes to catch the problems and keep the engine in safe parameters.

SCOTT26, has been saying I4 for at least two years based on the posts I can find which mention the M2 and hasn't swayed.

I'm disappointed its an I4 but then, it hasn't been confirmed, I haven't seen nor driven it. So until all three of those have been ticked - i'll hold off final judgement.

I missed the window on the 1M because I was mid-cycle when it was released, and they kept production low. I'd really like to see the M2 stick around for a couple of years so us normal people can actually own one without paying 20%-30% over sticker.

All the people holding out for the I6 M2 in spite of every supporting reason for an I4 remind me of the people who thought the M3/4 would have a V6.

+1 on this. Pretty much my situation exactly. If the price of the 1M had been kept in the "normal" range, I could have taken the initial hit of trading in the 135 early. But the math just didn't work out with the MSRP + whatever people were charging.

Also, by keeping the production number low, BMW effectively created an environment where the 1M wouldn't sell for sticker. Seemed kind of dumb when the official company line was to "introduce an entry level/more affordable M"

If they do that again, I think they will be making a mistake, but we shall see...

Just my $.02

IMO anyone who's driven a BMW knows that an I6 is far superior to an I4 period. It doesn't matter how much power to try to muster out of an i4, it will never have the balance of the i6.

I believe scott over an old article too.....but can't help but feel disappointed at the 4 banger choice. Also in the news today was that Audi is developing a 375hp 4 banger....so the M2 ain't all that special already *sigh*

make an M2 with an inline 6 and I'd gladly put a deposit down to order one.

Since Scott was talking about a 4cyl. engine which could be used in the X1M AND the M2 I'm confused about how this is possible?! So far I know you can't use a transverse mounted engine in the front made for FWD also for RWD, or change it (easy) to RWD setup. - please correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't know the date when the interview was given, I think I found it here on bimmerpost and only saved the scans myself at 30th oct. 2013. Scotts infos or rumours (?) are definitely newer but I don't think decisions like that change so fast in this branche. I hope Scott is wrong, the end.

It's not the exact same engine, but VW/Audi did this for a long time back when they 1.8T was new. Audi Quattro cars had an inline-mounted version of the 1.8T that was transversely mounted in all FWD VW and Audi cars. It wasn't the same exact engine, but it was very similar. They might still do this today with the 2.0T, but I don't know. I know that Audi has Quattro systems that work with transverse mounted engines now days.

It does mean additional development costs, but it's cheaper than developing two completely different engines.
