The Gold Reflective Film is an aerospace material capable of reflecting 78% of all radiant heat with continuous operating temperatures of 450 degrees centigrade. The material is metalized polyamide polymer laminated glass cloth with a high temperature pressure sensitive adhesive. The film is lightweight at only 5oz per square yard, and is easy to apply and remove. Typical applications include; but are not limited to, engine covers, side pods, suspension, under trays/floors, seat bottoms, fire walls and bulkheads. The minimum air gap to heat source is just 1mm.
It reduces AIT temps, its not cheap. As far as wrinkles, i'm not really sure, its not vinyl so heat won't help stretch it. It's not for cosmetic. See turbo blankets or header wrap etc...

If you want to lower IAT's upgrade your cooler. Heat wrap is best left for insulating hot parts or to prevent damage to those parts near heat sources such as the turbo. Last edited by Acheron83; 11-14-2016 at 09:53 AM.. |

I've ran reflective tape before. Not a huge priority, but something to consider. I'll probably wrap my intake soon with what I have left over from previous builds.

Everything is upgraded already. FBO.
I saw a difference of 10 degrees F with adding this an a AFE scoop behind the grill. Not a major difference. It more to protect from the engine bay heat as it can get over 200f on a track day very quickly. Anything helps at that point. Waiting for the vorsteiner hood and will put that on next.

Just added one of these to my EWG n55 c/w Dinan CAI.
Stock EWG inlet pipe is still sized to suit smaller PWG - photo below illustrates this quite well. My feedback on page 3 of this thread and correlates well with OEM's dyno results on 1st page of the same thread. Works well with Dinan CAI on my car in that IAT's are down, throttle response is better and sounds naughtier on ~ 70% and above throttle esp in sport + mode !!! |

I'm aware of the difference between heat reflective or insulating products. Fact of the matter is insulating the inlet/intake portion pre-turbo will have little effect on reducing overall IAT's.

Agreed, that's why it should be low on the priority list. Though for track sessions I think it's more beneficial for turbo cars than some would think. I have some laying around so I might as well use it.

I.e. the fancy expensive gold tape works just the same as shiny aluminum foil. Not saying it's worth the effort, but you could wrap your intake in fiberglass tape and cover that tape with aluminum foil if you were so inclined I ordered some gold foil fiberglass tape from Amazon for $5-10. It has a highly emmissive surface, it has a fiberglass fabric backing, and the adhesive on it is very tacky and has held up well. |

I tried the gold reflective tape, but my OCD decided the wrinkles were not worth dealing with for questionable gains. Unfortunately given the nature of the product it isn't as forgiving as fabric tape.

There's no benefit to that tape. Think about it. The pipe is sitting in a hot engine bay. It's going to heat soak as the whole engine bay is screaming hot. The tape is only good at shielding from a nearby and direct heat source; not one that envelopes the whole surrounding area.

I nearly failed Physics in high school, along with Bio and Chem for good measure. Much to my physician father's shame.
I am easily enthralled with shiny things, and like doing projects on the car

Believe me, I can relate. I often tinker, just to tinker.

Hell I even ordered a separate remote for an in trunk sub to run at the same time even though the chances of an in trunk sub are slim to none.

I can assure you it's not worth the time. It won't be like you added gobs of power and the car magically pushes you back in the seat that much more, way more other real mods out there for sure.
