I think it's great Tesla (for now) is regularly improving their cars and not waiting 7 years to do it. Most of them are free software upgrades and anything else they upgrade is typically offered to owners at a discounted rate.

Tesla Roadster upgrade battery is $29,000.

Not sure how the Vette made the list. Have yet to see how that car holds up in a crash. I have not seen crash test reports on the Vette. Kudos to the M235i for 3rd spot!

This is Consumer Reports "sporty car" category. For this category, the price limits are much higher.

They test and recommend cars in different segments. (They also recommend used cars - they recommend a used Accord to parents buying a car with a child who recently got a license.) Most of their categories have various parameters, e.g., number of doors, price, cargo space, etc. that define the category. e.g., A compact SUV has 4 doors plus at least X cu ft of cargo space and is priced under Y.

Subscribe to CR for more info on their methodology - they have a detailed description. For this test, in the sporty category, all it means is that the M235i scored higher in this category than the 228i.

This should come as no surprise. The 135i had the same distinction. It was the second highest ranked car by CR during its time.

I was at a party with a friend who races an old M Coupe (clown shoe) and an M3 E30. I told him the M235i is the best car in it's class that BMW makes. I told him that if someone were to offer to trade me an M4 for my M235i, I wouldn't do it. The size, spunk, handling, mpg, livability, tossability, etc. They nailed it with this thing...and year's later the press still agrees.

At the party was also a professional test car driver for BMW (for mules) out of Oxnard, CA. He gets to drive everything that BMW and Mini make on the coastal and canyon roads of So Cal...years before the cars are released. He said the same thing...that though some of the M's were more powerful/aggressive, the M235 was his favorite test car of all time.

The pending M2 should be even better. (lighter, more powerful, tighter suspension, etc.). However, there's the slight possibility that something in the blend of things gets askew. I hope not. In the meantime, I'm going to enjoy the hell out of my little beast.

wow that test is bad, has the new corvette at #7? all I hear from vette owners are problems -- major ones.

Too bad these consumer tests now rely on a lot of data about touch screens and such, and not as much on mechanical stuff.

That's a big rap. But I can understand it, I have driven a few performance cars, owned a few, have been racing for a number of years. The balance, feedback - and engine - of this car is fantastic.

+1 with a ECU Flash you're on the same level with an advantage of having a lighter front nose

Lightbulb

It's interesting how some people are able to read between the lines. You consider an M3 or M4, great cars with big price tags when you add a few goodies. You look at cars like the Chevy SS, 2016 Camaro or Mustang, interesting but fairly common and no free MX. Mercedes AMG's and Porsche, again big price tags and you'll pay through the nose for MX.

BMW got the M235i in that sweet spot. While sort of expensive, after your normal 6% - 7% discount you're feeling less pain. If you buy an Xdrive you're good for all seasons. Driving... well, you know why we buy the car. I just find it interesting how other people have yet to discover this pocket rocket. Very few available in the northeast. I'm guessing due to limited production, not because they're flying off the lots. I've never even seen one while traveling around NYC ! My only gripe... where is my Heads Up Display ?

If they offered Heads Up in the M235i, I would def have bought it. It's available in Chevy's for goodness sake !

Sorry MX = Aviation abbreviation for Maintenance

Agreed. Same goes for a good piggyback tune. I went for the 228i because the car was fully loaded and I knew that even after extensive modding (suspension, engine, exhaust) it would end up costing me less than a similarly equipped M235i. Not that the 235 isn't a fine car, or that the 6-cylinder engine isn't sweet (and less hectic in high-speed cruising). The turbocharged 4-banger suits my need for a very sporty drive around the city (Los Angeles) and my M Sport is as fast as a stock M235i now. I feel a little sad that the 228i gets overlooked in things like the CR Best Car listing when in so many important respects it has the same driving characteristics as the 235.

I work at tesla, own a 228 and this list always makes me very happy. P90D was recently ranked a "103/100" too. I will be a proud model 3 owner when it comes out. For now I'm in love with the 2er.

Sorry but I'll take the M235 any day. At least I'll make it around the Ring without limp mode. The Ring is a staple for sports cars. IMO, shouldn't call it a sports car if it can't lap the Ring.
