4 doors

I'll be happy with 4 doors. Sedan, gc same to me. Even the gt doesn't look that bad. My earlier comment re alfa gtv still stands.

I'm looking for a successor to my e36 m345 (er, 332i).

A 4 door 2 series is a perfect fit.

They finally wised up after going into bankruptcy and got rid of nonperforming and under performing lines like Saturn, Pontiac, Oldsmobile and Hummer. You can't cater to every single individual buyer out there. Figure out who and what you are and build for those markets. BMW is a luxury sport car company that produces The Ultimate Driving Machine. Anything less than that (like a FWD family hauler of whatever description) dilutes the brand and conflicts with what they purport to be.
GM broke the bank by making crappy cars for years for the NA market, and left their good stuff for Europe only. They had their head in the sand without a doubt but it really had nothing to do with them making to many models, but rather just not making any good ones.

The 3 series have gotten too big (aka lincoln towncar) and alot of ppl would like a 2 series size sedan like the e46
Very few people want a sedan that small. See lack of sales success for the Cadillac ATS as evidence, despite glowing reviews. The 3-series is NOT a large car, and really the biggest issue is that BMW can't make a car smaller than that for cheaper enough to be able to sell it for enough less in the US. The 2-series coupe is just about exactly the same price range as a 3-series already, a 2-series sedan would have to be much cheaper.

If you want an e46, just buy an e46, plenty of nice ones out there.

F30 3-series has a longer wheelbase than the first 7-series and just a bit shorter. It is now a big car. The marketplace is voting with Audi, just look at how successful their new A3 is so far, and it appears to not have taken any share away from the A4.

In the meantime, Audi and Merc will continue to clean up in the small sedan market while BMW scrambles to counter their success.

By modern standards, the 3-series is still a small car. A RWD car much smaller does not have usable rear seat space - my e91 is marginal at best back there. The A3 is a Golf in sedan clothing (and the CLA is an A/B-class), and is much less expensive to build than a 2-series. The only way BMW could compete is with a FWD car based on their new platform. Which is fine with me, but I can just imagine the wailing and gnashing of teeth that will result if/when they sell it in the States. I am betting they likely will not sell one here, to maintain their "pure" brand image.

And a 235GC will sell too! Personally I don't like the looks of the X4 or GT.
The renderings last year of a 2 series GC are far more pleasing.
