Taking quite a while to get production number

Hey folks!

I put down a deposit and placed an order for a custom build M240i on the 22nd of January with a dealer that said they had an open January allotment.

From looking at other postings ( http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1181156 ) I should have gotten the order number almost immediately:

Quote:
place your order, put down your deposit (if required), and ask for your production order number. (if your dealership had an allocation) This is a 7 digit number that ties you to the allocation. You should receive this production number within a few hours or within the next day at the latest.
After a couple of weeks went by, I emailed them with my concern and was told:

Quote:
You don’t have chassis yet there are only 4 available on the west cost right now. We have been promised a chassis on Monday and accelerated build time. Everyone is kinda in the same boat right now. It has to do with factory build schedule. I think we are still okay. I will keep you updated.
This happens a lot around this time of year.
Now, I'm not horribly familiar with how this all works, but I do know The Germans and I can't imagine that BMW would give a dealership an allocation that they couldn't fulfill unless there were extreme extenuating circumstances.

Has anyone else done a custom order and had it take this long to get the production number? I'm starting to get worried here that they didn't actually have a January allotment and were waiting for a February (Monday was the first of Feb) one and didn't get one.

I found this thread: http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1307489 which had some helpful info. From a couple of the comments, it did seem to suggest that my dealer didn't actually have a January allotment or they would have given me a production number right away.

Still no build code / VIN yet. The dealer thinks they may be switching to 2019 models. Does that sound about right?

Talked with another forum member who put an order in for one on 2nd February and car was built on 21st February. So this has me worried that the dealer didn't actually have a Q1 allocation and is perhaps stringing me along until they do have one. Does anyone have experience with an order taking this long to get a build number when they aren't switching model years / on summer holiday?

Dealer doesn't have a production number, so you are in a waiting pattern. Find another dealer if you aren't married to this one. Ideally the store should trade for a number but they don't seem motivated.

I'm not completely married, but they did give me a massive discount so that might explain why they aren't willing to do a trade, as you suggest, as I assume it would cost them something.

My issue now is that my current car, a E46 330Ci ZHP, needs a vanos and ignition coil repair and the engine keeps running rougher with each passing week. At 165K and a bit of body damage, it's not really worth anything as a trade. I'm trying to avoid having to put more money into that car if I can help it. But if we're looking at a May / June timeframe then I may have to.

Guess I’m learning more about BMW order codes and the process. I now recall another dealer saying they had a "ready to build" allotment and needed to put the changes in for my specific build soon “before it went 150”. I thought at the time he might be trying to rush me, but seems there was a legit reason for saying that. From my reading, one usually expect that when a dealer says they "have an allotment" that it’s ready to build and you should get a build code within minutes. Guess I should have had that clarified at the time, but I didn’t know the difference.

Now the serious waiting and build/delivery tracking time begins !
Enjoy the ride! Once you get a VIN, then you can track its voyage to the U.S. here (assuming its getting a ride on Wallenius lines): https://www.2wglobal.com/

You got it. Man, it seems like it takes forever. I'll say this though it's one of the things I remember most about the whole experience. The waiting, obsessing, watching every video I could find on the 2, memorizing the owners manual (you get the point). Not many people can say they special ordered a car exactly the way they wanted it.
