How do I turn off rain sensing wipers?
I can't figure out how to disable auto/rain sensing wipers. I hate smearing the windshield with minor amounts of rain, especially when my windshield is ceramic coated and the water is gonna fly off anyway.

Yep no button on the 240s. Just move the position of the lever to the bottom. One position up is rain sensing mode and the switch adjusts the sensitivity. I've never known the rain sensing "feature" to work very well so I leave it off. It is nice that is a physical position that it can be left in. My old 135i had the button on the end of the stalk and you had to press it each time you got in if you wanted to have it be off.

As for how well it works, granted, I have to turn it on manually each time I want to use it, but once I enable it, I've found it to work fairly well. You still have to adjust the speed using the wheel on the stock occasionally, but I rarely use the wipers in either the normal or high speed positions. My wife leaves her LCI 230 on auto all the time and hasn't had any issues.

The only issue with leaving wipers on auto all the time is that they will be activated in a drive-through carwash, which can quickly lead to damage. Of course, I am certain that no member of this forum would ever go near such a facility.

Yeah ditto on the car wash.
I spent 6 hours this weekend polishing and ceramic coating my car. Nobody touches it but me. I have a rack full of detailing products in my garage. |

The only washing my car has ever had is at a touchless car wash a few minutes away. And since I had the ceramic coating applied, drying the car is now a snap – that coating is the bee's knees. Since the end of 2019 I've averaged 130 miles a month, so keeping the car looking shiny and new is pretty easy. It helps that the car has only been in the rain twice, including the day I drove away from the dealership. All credit to that touchless car wash, though! Now, if the subject is wheels and calipers...well, that's a different story. Mine get treated the way I used to treat my dress shoes (anyone remember when those were still a thing?): never leave home without them looking shiny, polished, and new. Before I had the wheels ceramic-coated, I spent an insane amount of time making sure no race or OEM pads' brake dust became embedded in the clear coat. After a track event, it took me two hours to clean the ARC-8s back to looking shiny and new. The wheels came off the car to get at the barrels and the backs of the spokes. I still clean all three sets of wheels that way. I get wanting to keep a car looking like you want it to look; I'm just glad I can be satisfied in that regard without spending much time at it. Otherwise, I'd have to find a detailer, 'cause I'm way too lazy to wash my own car.

I put a windshield banner across the top of the windshield, and it covered the rain sensor. So now its...uh...permanently off.

Took the car for first service yesterday (oil). Forgot to tell the service advisor that I can't figure out the rain sensing wipers.
Got car back today and "AUTO" is no longer illuminated. I guess they did a software update, or something. Anyway, it does appear that they noticed the issue and it's resolved. |
