I just found a nail or screw in my right rear tire (I found it last night ... picture attached). I do not think it has punctured as I have had no pressure loss (measured with a gauge). I do not have run flats, so given the location of the screw/nail, even if it is punctured, I am assuming the tire is repairable because it’s clearly in the tread?

I haven’t pulled it out because it might be punctured, but worried about driving on it to get it repaired in case I push it in further and do puncture it if it isn’t already.

If you think it’s repairable, OK to have any tire shop do it? Would you pull the nail or drive on it?

Leave it in until you're ready to repair it.

Some places will repair for free. Do NOT let them pull the nail out until they confirm they can repair it. Some places will pull it and then say "oh you have to get a new tire".

I've repaired many a tire myself with a plug kit. Good enough for street use and drag race/roll racing. Never had issues. I have 3 plugs in currently

Would not use for track days on a road course.

hard to tell from the pic but it looks way too close to the sidewall for a tire shop to want to repair it.

Think it's pretty close to an inch ... isn't that the fine line?

If going by Michelin Tire since it is on the outside of the circumference groves ( not within) it shouldn't be patched. The reason no patch? a tech told me because the diameter size of the head of the inner patch will curve over the inner sidewall preventing a smooth tight bond.

And plugs are frowned upon by all the manufacturers and dealers.

However, I plugged a similar nail whole like that, mine was leaking air, did the repair w/o dismounting wheel/tire from car. It's been five-months and seen some high speeds, not 130 mph for forty-minutes but higher speed of very short duration and 85-90mph for an hour or more. No issues.

I also had previous patch in the same tire.

I measured it and it's almost 2" in from the sidewall. I have heard from two BMW SA's that I know that 1" is the minimum for a patch so I'm hopeful that if it's punctured I won't have an issue ... now just have to pick the right tire shop.

My dealer just replaced one of my RFT's for free b/c it had a nail in it. My car only has 4k miles on it though.

I have even less miles, but I didn't opt for the tire warranty. I've never gone through enough tires being damaged to justify it.

Turns out to be a short screw which didn't penetrate the tire. No leak ... all good. Thanks for the feedback!
