It's all about marketing. BMW created a "limited edition" that dealers can sell as something that is rare and buyers will want it because it's "special". The prospective BMW buyer market goes way beyond the BMW "enthusiasts" that populate this forum and others like it. The car wasn't developed for folks like us who know all the ins and out about the various 2 Series models and M Performance accessories and available mods, etc., but for the guys and gals who walk into the showroom to buy their first new BMW and see several "plain Jane" 2 Series and then see the "one" M240i M Performance Edition too.

Thumbs up Nice ride !

That is because you people are smart enough not to be suckers in, without an LSD.

I am wondering why no m performance Exhaust. BMW has changed the meaning of Performance as we know it. Unthinkable /

This is a worse gouging than the limited edition M2. With the M2, they removed options and charged more so you got less for more but at least you got a lighter, more track oriented car.

They should have offered the limited M2 with a carbon roof and a different color and this limited M240i with LSD and a different color.

I'm sure there are others out there who have done the same. If BMW offers this car with all of these m performance goodies on it at a cheaper price than if you added them each separately then the special edition version makes some kind of sense in that respect.
Since you put the 2er M Performance package together before BMW did, you may have a good case for theft of intellectual property and/or cultural appropriation...

Without an LSD...no point even publishing numbers for risk of embarrassment for the 340. Pretty sure that Civic has a pretty trick LSD to lay down that lap...plus much lighter and better tuned suspension than the 340i...im pretty sure the 340i would get smoked time wise. Honda can build a pretty fast road car....can't build a modern F1 engine to save their lives...sorry McLaren....but can build a pretty fast road car

Taking Honda's claim that the rollcage that was fitted and other 'minor' mods to make the car safer on the track didn't affect it's performance compared with the stock Type R, the biggest difference from the road car was the use of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres. These tyres seem to be worth about 2 seconds per minute of lap time compared with the Michelin Super Sport tyre, based on info in various online forums and Michelin's insinuations. Honda will probably sell the Type R with ContiSport 6 tyres, so if we take them as equivalent to the PSS, the Type R would lap the Nurburgring in about 7:59 on stock tyres. The M2 did it in 7:58 in stock configuration, so an M240i would likely be slower, but not by much.

Your last sentence is literally exactly what they do.

The purpose is to have the port add the M performance parts all at one time and you get a great deal on them.

You usually get a bmw individual color for free and an interior that is only available in M cars.

All for a price of about 3000 more than a fully loaded car without any m performance parts.

While this is accurate, it's from a retail BMW price point. Another thing to note is that these cars come with all options, none spared. The same car, loaded without the M bits was about $56k CDN, and the M Performance car was $59,900 CDN. So from that perspective, an outsider coming in would definitely see the value of having everything from the factory, included and discounted. I haven't added up all of the M bits to see a true MSRP on just the parts, though. Then there's paint, and installation costs to factor in as well.

Either way, if you can get it on the car from the factory for the same or better than buying it afterwards, go for it. Otherwise I think a few members here have gone full M performance kit on their cars and have came in less than it would have cost from BMW, but they did a lot themselves. It's cosmetic up to the LSD, at which point you'll have to factor in that cost as well.

Where can I buy one?

Seems like none of the dealers I have talked to knows about the M Performance Edition. Anyone know where I can find a dealer?

My local dealer has a standing offer on the M240i to add all the retro-fit M Performance extras at a big discount on a new M240i order - I'm guessing pretty much at cost to them. They've even done a video and sent it out to all their customers. Thay'll also de-badge as part of the package.

Talking to the dealer at a recent visit, it's worth it to them to capture people who are considering an M2 but then get put off by the wait. While there is a core of people ordering M2s who know exactly what they're getting, he said they find that a lot of people who try the M240i conclude it's more suitable as their only car and DD. And they have stock M240is that they can convert straight away.

I'm sure other dealers have figured this approach out, so it's just BMW responding to a demand that their dealers have identified.

The above makes perfect sense. I could have bought the M2 (w/o any mark-up a year ago) or a discounted M240i (special order to my spec) and went w/ the M240i for it's near equal straight line performance to the M2 w/ a more civilized ride.

Like GM does w/ the Corvette, they offer a Stingray, ZO6 and now a GS, but throw in a Carbon 65th anniversary addition.

The BMW performance addition will appeal to some to sate their personal tastes. For me, personally, While the looks fine, I'm not really after many of the add-ons. The base M240i looks suit me fine.

NOW, if the M Performance edition had the body of the M2 w/ the M240i under-pinnings, I'd be all over that car. To me, the M2 looks great w/ the flared rear fenders and aggressive nose. In fact I was close to pulling the trigger on the M2 on it's looks alone.

How cool would that be?

Basically meant dropping the M2 body on an M240i and selling it as the M Performance Edition. Maybe add some interior accents and som striping on the exterior.

For me that would be a appealing alternative to the stock M240i or the M2.

How about an M2 with the b58 and adaptive suspension? That would be perfect for me.

Say what you want but the m240i has more than proven its worthiness of those badges. These cars are extremely well accepted and out perform many cars out there that are proven sports cars in the market, so as far as Iím concerned these cars can proudly wear those badges.

This would make sales struggle for the 2 series counterpart (m240) I would suspect.

I totally agree and I think I kind of went off topic thinking more about what I would have liked the m2 to have been. It's just USA-Ret got me dreaming...
