1st Road Trip with the 2

We've owned our 228i for almost a year but due to my bad hip we haven't been able to take it on a road trip until this weekend. Tomorrow we'll be embarking on about a 750 mile (roundtrip) venture to the Norwegian Riviera (otherwise known as the Minnesota North Shore). Looking forward to the experience and hoping for some good top down weather.

I've only been to each end of that part of Lake Superior (Duluth in 1998 while crossing that part of the country from MI's Upper Peninsula to Whitefish, MT on US-2 and then Thunder Bay on a 2001 trip from Northern New England to Edmonton, AB). I expect you'll have pretty nice weather up there at this time of year.

Have a good trip, and post some pictures if you get the chance!

I have never been impressed with the seats on the 2 series and the 3 series are the same since I have a relative who owns one. I get tired after a hundred miles of driving and need to stop to get out. My previous car was a JCW Coupe with sports seats and was far more comfortable on long drives.

The thigh extender settings don't fit me well and the padding of the overall seat is very stiff no matter how I play with the adjustments. Definitely not the best car for comfort on a long drive.

It really depends on the shape of each individual’s body. Our M240i sports seats without adjustable lumbar support are more comfortable for me on a 500km drive I usually do without stopping, than the softer 14-way non-sport seats with adjustable lumbar support that our Macan S has.

Well, the seats are not my favorite but only because the side bolsters on the seat cushion. They are too aggressive for my bad hip. I actually use a seat cushion from Purple, it is 1" thick and raises me up so the side bolsters aren't so aggressive. How this set up works on a long drive will be determined starting today.

I did a 5300 mile road trip in June. Fort Worth, TX to Albuquerque, to the Grand Canyon, to Bakersfield, CA, to near Sacramento, then north through Oregon to Tacoma. Spent two days there then back through Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico.

I have a 230i and it was fun and comfortable. It was my first time driving through winding mountain highways, and the car was superb.

Enjoy your trip

Got to our hotel and I am parked next to this little 89 3 series.

By the way, this is our view from our balcony:

A few more from day two. The 2 has performed flawlessly so far over about 550 miles total. Almost all those miles with the top down.

I'd sure like to know how this car got this deep in the woods and how those large rocks ended up on top of it. One thing I can tell you is its been there for a very long time.

Road trip complete and we're back home. We drove 890 miles in all. The 2 performed flawlessly. It even survived being parked outside last night in a very loud thunderstorm with torrential downpours. Not a drop inside the car. The only minor complaint is the run flats tendency to want to follow the grooves in the concrete portions of the freeway, lending a bit of instability to the steering. Might have been worse if this car actually had any steering feel, which is doesn't. I think we averaged about 27 mpg. She is all washed and ready for further adventure now. Just a few pictures from our drive home :

You, sir, may be the very first to have established a meaningful reason for drivers to appreciate reduced steering feel.

"Follow[ing] the grooves" in a roadway has been an unpleasant side-effect of certain tires for a very long time, and reduced steering feel is, to me, a newly-identified means of solving or minimizing the problem.

Very nice photos...thanks for sharing!

They are stock. At least, what was on the car when we bought it.

They look like 17X7 ET40 380s, as seen in this current for sale thread: https://www.2addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=1834108 and here on realoem: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=36_1934.

My wife and I are big fans of the North shore too. Great pics! We're planning a trip there in the Spring.
