LSD Clicking Sound.

I have the MP LSD and have less than 500 miles on it. I started to notice a click on acceleration and deceleration. The same sound can be heard when the car is warm and putting the transmission into R or D.

The dealer preformed a SIB which basically added grease and replaced a seal.

The sound was gone for about 50 miles and has now returned. Waiting for the dealer to find out what the next move is. Of course this was their first LSD install....

Anyone with this issue? or advise?

Thanks.

I'd ask your selling dealer for a goodwill replacement due to excessive noise.

Be nice to listen to unit up on lift, wonder if sloppy prop shaft install?

mine is fine too. I ordered it with the LSD, so it came installed at Port, I guess. Its on the window sticker as well. Sorry you are having issues and I hope this is a once off or an installation problem.

Possibly a damaged or chipped pinion gear tooth, or ring gear tooth.

Replacing a seal probably won't resolve the issue.

Thanks all for the words. I will keep the thread updated as I learn more. I think its more about the connection with the drive shaft or wheels than internal to the diff.

We will soon find out. Otherwise I love this car.

Slightly off topic: did you upgrade LSD after you had a few miles on the open diff? If so, any comments on the day to day difference?

Very much interested also, as well as hearing the final solution to your problem and eventually the total cost? I also hesitate going to a dealer where I'm almost certain this would be the first LSD install... But until then, again, I must decide if it does worth it, so an objective feed back should be highly appreciated, thank you in advance.

My case was very special. I would have gotten it Port Installed but since it was an ED your not allowed to do that. In the end I got what I needed to make it work with my transaction.....

I drove the car in Europe for 950 miles but not hard enough to engage the ediff. The car was awesome and all that I was looking for.

The LSD on the street under normal driving is virtually undetectable.

However, when you really start to get on it you can feel that the car is a bit stronger out of the corners with NO wheel spin and that it can slightly pivot the rear even with DSC still active. Now that I think of it, I don't really get many flashing lights regarding traction control. That is the benefit of the sticky tires and what an LSD should do, put the power down.

Now that being said, the ediff system on the M235 is very good. That combined with the PSS tires, is more than most will need on the street.

I came from an M3 and just wanted an LSD. Now when things get slippery or you want to be BAD, the LSD is a little bit smoother than the ediff. I think most should go without it if they will not track the car. My ego or just wanting something different pushed me into this option.

I need to get more aggressive milage under my belt before I can make a final judgement. More to come.

Hope that helps.

Looking forward to more feedback as well when you've got more miles under your belt as I trust your judgement and perspective

I'm thinking a spring order but undecided as to RWD vs xDrive still. I might forgo a bit of my track fun for an all-round/all-weather "I can push it as hard as I like anytime I want" kind of feel but....still time to make the final decision.

For me the Ediff and PSS tires are not so great for where I drive. You'll need perfect weather to have good grip, alittle moisture on the road and be prepare to have some fishtail action. Might be better for the folks in the midwest/west

Yes, very helpful.

To be honest, the lack of LSD almost scared me away from the M235i. I come from a muscle car background (Mustangs, Camaros, 4-4-2, Corvette), and it would be unheard of for any of those cars to lack an LSD. 99% of the time I will be on public roads since I only track once a year, but I'm still not sure if I'm going to miss it. The good thing is, if you realize you miss it, you can always add it.

So True. The only difference is on a lease. Adding after the fact, is that the LSD is NOT residualized on your lease.

That helps, thanks! I have come to the conclusion that I don't need the LSD, but the ego really wants it.

Well I got the LSD replaced and the clicking sound continues.

It would really be great if other owners that have the LSD Installed, have noticed any clicking sound when driving at slow speeds. Coming to a slow stop or accelerating or decelerating at low speeds. Also when moving from R or D with the eight speed automatic.

Thx

Wow-that a new LSD didn't fix things. I've read that since warranty work isn't a good income producer for a dealership so sometimes things don't go well. Personally found that many dealership techs are very sharp and noise issues are tough no matter the situation.

Don't get mad when I suggest a second time - maybe car up on lift and running to duplicate issue or chk out this video of the Steelman wireless chassis ear.

(The guy who does the video is a character, some of the vids are fun)

Have never experienced what you describe, but mine is 6MT. Maybe a transmission issue?

I think that's what they will look at next. That and transmission mounts.

Thanks.

Interesting video. On Friday I will discuss the next step. On my wife's car we had a creaking sound and they could only find it with a stethoscope. It was actually a motor mount that had failed.
