Yes, the stick out of the tips is a function of

1 - cut location on mid pipe for mounting MPE;
2 - trial and error of bending exhaust hangers;
3 - with latest version of MPE, tips slide on and secured with grub screw. Could pull tips out for more stick out from diffuser

Just finished my installation the MPE today re-using the factory tips. Used a flat head punch and hammer on the back side of the tips to get them loose on the factory muffler after 2-3 inches I was able to wiggle them off without too much force. There is no screw that secures the factory tips, just inside raise ribs that pressure fit them onto the exhaust pipe.

Once I cut the factory muffler off the main pipe (Harbor Freight $22 saw) I hung the new MPE muffler up. Note the new MPE comes with a premount exhaust valve module already installed so you don't have to reused the one installed on the factory muffler; very nice to just unplug and then plug in new one. I wasn't totally sure where to cut the old muffler off at so I went a little closer to the muffler (about 5 inches away) then hung the new muffler in place. Once installed I could easily mark the proper distance and do a second cut on the exhaust pipe to get down to just 2 mm from the new muffler pipe. The clamp provided works very well with just two 17 mm heads to tighten up to secure in place.

Putting the factory tips onto the muffler was very easy and they are not too tight as I have read on here. The diameter of the exhaust pipe tips are the same size as the factory muffler pipe tips so they go on with the same tight fit. Use a piece of wood on the opening of the tips and hammer the tips onto the pipe. Note the factory pipe ends have a mounted raise round extension that guide the tips on using a slit on the factory tips. Since there is not this same fitting on the MPE muffler you can decide how and where you want the slit on the tip to be oriented. I choose to put it underneath since you won't be able to see it; close to where it was on the factory muffler ends. Should be just as easy to remove the factory tips from the MPE muffler if/when you decide to revert back. I will have the factory muffler welded back on at a muffler shop when it is time to turn the car back in.

Hey Pave,

My car came with the MPE from the dealer. Since the diffuser was fitted today the rear pipes are about 1/2" or so inside the exhaust 'lips' of the diffuser. You mention they can be positioned. Where is the 'grub screw'? All I see is a what looks like a hex nut, that's below an oval hole, on the underside of the chrome tips. Thanks.

****EDIT****
So what looked like a hex nut was indeed an allen screw, which I found is called a grub screw overseas.

Could someone please tell me if this works the other way around? I mean, can you put the carbon fiber tips in the factory exhaust? Sorry if I contradict everyone's taste for the factory tips, but I like the carbon fiber's better and I'm really not thinking on purchasing the Performance Exhaust. Thanks for the comments

Will do. Odds are I might purchase the set you decide not to use.

For those that used the stock tips, Did you only have to order exhaust part number? Did you also have to buy the adapters? I am planning to get the diffuser as well, so I would purchase the part number for use WITH the diffuser. (Although I can't seem to figure out what the difference is? Tip length?)

These are the 3 part numbers listed on BMWUSA.com:

BMW M Performance Exhaust / With Diffuser 18302286673

Chrome Exhaust Finishers - Required 18302354364

BMW M Performance Exhaust Pipe Finisher Adapter / M235i 18302287042
