BMW M2 Rumors from M235i Launch

Updated 3/2/14:

BIMMERPOST evidence of 6 cylinder engine tested in M2 prototype.

This update brings us The News of the Year. Some of you may remember me from the crazy bmw.com-sourced pre-prod info dump in early 2013. I found another source. The info is very limited this time: just the model, engine, and transmission type, and lists not only the models that are guaranteed to come, but also all those that BMW considered as a possibility (for example, the list includes both RWD and xDrive, manual and auto US F31s). The regularly updated list has been kept here: http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=901686

Ladies and gentlemen, here is the latest update -- get ready for BMW M2!

-- BMW M2, N55B30T0, manual and auto

* This tells us at least that an M2 has been tested, and with an upgraded N55 engine paired to both a manual and auto transmission.

Source: http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=953325

1/20/14 post:

Autoexpress reports that a BMW insider they spoke to at the M235i launch in Las Vegas last week let on that the BMW M2 "makes a lot of sense." In addition, a "source" confirmed that a road-going version of the M235i Racing (a track-only customer race car) was considered for production, but this plan was nixed so as not to "step on the toes of something else higher up the range.” The source added that this refers to a new M car. The article goes on to speculate about pricing and other technical aspects, but that is purely guesswork at this point.

Our resident BMW insider, Scott26, has recently had this to add about a potential BMW M2.

Quote:
The time frame between M4 Coupe and M2 Coupe will be around two years to on sale date so there is plenty of opportunity and of course time to establish the M4 as the mid-level Coupe. And creating space for the M2.
Quote:
The strategy for the M2 shows how a lightweight philosophy would be the greatest advantage for an M2 along with more or less the same recipe as the 1er M Coupe.
So, there seems to be plenty of smoke (rumors) around a possible M2. Will this be a case of 'where there's smoke, there's fire'? Our fingers are crossed.

Drop two cylinders of the Autoexpress article.

BMW want the fastest four cylinder car in its segment. They also want the M2 to be the most progressive and dynamic car in its segment as well as the lightest performance car. They want a car that has a soul, unlike the Mercedes-Benz AMG A45/CLA 45 which are soulless to drive.

I believe there will be an M2, but I don't trust Autoexpress.

I was hoping it would have 6 but I am sure BMW will nail it. Can't wait to see what they do. I love the light weight/small concept.

BOOM! Confirmation of the 4 cylinder M2 with the more lux 6cyl (M235i) in the lineup. History may not repeat, but it does rhyme.

I love the idea of an "s20" or whatever they wind up calling it. Basically an s55 with 2 cyl out of the middle.

Less weight over the nose, lots of punch, what's not to love?

As I posted before who wouldn't rather an e30 M3 over an e30 328is?

Thanks Scott for the 4cyl confirmation! Seem like the 1M will be a keeper. I like the idea of the lightweight concept but having a 4cyl in a car close to 60k$(can) doesn't make sense to me.

They should shoehorn the e92 M3's S65 V8 engine into this baby.

Seems obvious to me, if you make an M2 and it is faster than the M235, it will be coming real damn close to the toes of things in "the upper range." Not much room in between the lineup. Still would like to see an M2!

It would be hard not to pick up an M2 after my lease on the M235i comes up

Scott, do you know if this will be a one off, limited production cycle like the 1M or will it be in the line up for a few years?

I agree, unless there are plans to up the power on the M3/M4 there won't be much room to squeeze this car in between the M235i and M3

No way. I would think it would be front heavy and wouldn't handle so well.

I think everyone remembers the Z8 and how well that worked out

The renders looks spot on in terms of current design language and the M3/4. Not sure how I take the news on the I4 layout but I guess as long as the power is there and its a true M above the M235i below the M4 then all good.

Renders look fantastic by the way, perfect!

As much as I want the I6, I could see them definitely making it a I4 power plant.
It makes sense. They can squeeze 350-360hp out if it, make it insane light. And it'll never tread on the F80-82.

I think an M2 deserves to exist and if ever so that's where my move is going. As long as it's not some stupid ridiculous price tag like 60k msrp...
