14' Cayman S vs M235i

I've got a 2014 M235i with a few modifications to say the least but... I really want to drive a true sports car. I feel the M235I is a little to conventional and doesn't have that "sports car" look.. I can purchase a Cayman S with a manual transmission and all essential track options such a Porsche Torque Vectoring, PASM and of coarse a fire extinguisher (3 seconds faster around the track!).

Now, the car has no navigation or back up camera (which I never use). I do not have kids and the payment is about $200 a month higher.

I've been driving BMW since I started driving in 06'. However, I have been managing a Porsche dealer for the last three years and my boss is still trying to convince me to get into a Cayman S.

Any previous Cayman owners?

I am usually pretty anti-porsche, as almost all the time they come across as a midlife crisis car to me, but I have to admit, that is a beautiful car. I really like it.

Are you a certified Porsche employee? If so, I'm not sure if you knew but if you are you have stupid crazy incentives on leases on Caymans and Boxsters! I think its something like 80% in residuals! If you are an employee it would be crazy not to!

You did mention that you've been managing a Porsche dealership for the past three years. So, this means that you know that Porsche the base 911 and the Cayman S share a 3.4-liter flat-six. However, to keep the their halo model on top, Porsche has detuned the mid-engined model’s from 350 horsepower from 325. Torque is down, too, from 287 pound-feet in the Carrera to 272 in the 981.

It's obvious to me that even the car's manufacturer is spacing out the difference between the 991 and the 981. All indicative that the Cayman S is indeed the best sports car out of Zuffenhausen albeit at a tad better price.

I have a 991 and a m235i and access to a 981 cayman s at the track. Cayman S is my favorite track car, but not very usable if you have any kids, ext. If you have another car I would get the cayman. M235i is def. all around better car, But not as focused on the track. Cayman is a lot harder to live with day to day, but that may not be an issue for you. If you have not done a ton of track driving the m235i will be just as much fun for quite some time.

I will say that Porsche reliability is garbage, and its only gotten worse on the new models. This is my first BMW so I cant say much (have had 6 911's) I would not touch a Porsche out of warranty or CPO.

FYI PTV eats rear brakes and rotors on the track like no ones business.

I'm a certified employee and have completed IToP in Germany. The unfortunate side is, the program you are talking about is only available through Porsche NA. I'm in Canada and PCL hasn't offered that option yet.

Exactly, I've driven everything from Macan to 918 in the last three years and nothing has put more of a smile on my face than the Cayman GTS and S (Okay, 918 and CGT were pretty awesome... and so GT3... but let's be elastic here).

The stability of the chassis in corners is a complete adrenaline rush. While the 0-60 maybe a bit slower than you'd expect out of a $80,000 sports car the handling and raw feel of a sports car seems to be so much more lively than the M235i - even after tune + downpipes and exhaust.

I think I've made my decision, however loosing two seats kind of sucks if me and the fiancee go out with friends.

Also get it while you can before Porsche gets the crazy idea in mind to downsize from the flat 6 to boosted 4 bangers!

I've got no kids and they will only be a few years down the pipeline. I typically only keep cars for 2-3 years (if I am lucky) anyways.

I've got access to service at my dealer. Being fixed operations allows me to be in a little bit better situation than some when it comes to servicing

Truthfully, that is my plan. I'm not a purist, but I do agree that the 4 bangers just will not be able to make the sound of the glorious flat 6.

Bad idea if you ask me...considering the one reason I refused to get a 228i was because of the sound of it. Then again I am a very unusual consumer lol.

Yeah, those engines make me cringe. Sound like they're falling apart. But, I'd still do the Cayman.

Sound is not important to me. I am satisfied with my 228i for the most part. The power and driving dynamics are top notch. I think it sounds great for a 4 cylinder. The active sound was a great idea. Sounds good from the cabin but is not obnoxious and attention drawing from outside. Interior is a little cheap looking..but I guess you cant have everything in a car at this price point. I would take the Cayman over every car BMW makes.

I'm with you. Sound is really important to me. Really don't like 4 cyl sound.

Beautiful! And manual too. Sorry. Cayman is more special. Good luck.

You know, realistically I could have a better spot for the cash (RRSPS, savings, investments) but I've came to realize with people passing in my life that life is too short. In two years I've lost friends and family way to early in life and if I'm going to do this its got to be when I'm young and able.

I need to grind my dealer principle on the price, but should be a proud owner by end of month!
