Gear indicator

I've seen a few threads about other BMW models, being able to code in a (current) gear indicator to be displayed in the center display. Does any body know if this is possible in a 2021 M2C MT?

Yes, because the 6MT in our F8X cars have a gear position indicator, you would just need to figure out the channel in the canbus that these parameters fall under.

It would probably be better to just get something like bootmod3 and then use the logging capabilities to view the gear position. Then when you need to tune the car you have a platform already inplace for doing that. If you don't want to go with this option, you could also go with protool - it has a gauge option as well and should be able to log gear position and with protool you will be able to code your car.

Bimmerlink can also show current gear. I have the Dashboard screen set up to show that, oil temp/pressure, IAT, coolant temp & boost pressure.

That is indeed an option, but personally I wouldn't waste my money on bimmer link (I own bimmerlink as well) because a significantly better option in protool is available. Protool will also give alot of ISTA functionality (like actuating parts on the car - release rear parking brake on the g80 for servicing) that bimmerlink doesn't have.

Ratkiller out of curiosity what is the purpose you have in mind for this? Lots of people offering options, but without knowing WHY you want it displayed they may or may not be good options for you. If the answer is "just cause" or anything similar nothing wrong with that, but it's still useful info. ;-)

Sooo, when my 2021 w/ 6 speed manual wants me to upshift, it displays an "up" arrow w/ the next gear number

Is that display, -1, not sufficient?

I’ve tried every possible combination in BimmerCode and couldn’t figure out how to make it just display the gear lol - I did however get it switched to M2C settings so that it shows “MDM” instead of “Traction”

I still don't understand the desire. Do y'all not know what gear you're in? Or do you have autos?

This would be a nice small change. Where is that in BimmerCode?

Honestly bro, I don't remember lol - I was really just messing around in the advanced settings to see what I could do with it. I vaguely remember going into the advanced settings for kombi and changing something along the lines of "variant" to "M variant" and that changed it to MDM. Keep in mind, that it got rid of the menu that shows the drive mode selection on the dash. It essentially converted my cluster to M2C settings but obviously, we don't have the same drivelogic as the M2C so I just leave the mpg page up so that it doesn't show blank drivelogic settings.

The DCT tells you what gear its in on the dash. I thought with the manual you have a stick between the seats that you can grab and that tells what gear you're in.

Yeah that's what I was getting at. With a manual I don't know why this is a desired feature.

Right? Isn't that part of the engagement fun, we with the DCT are missing out on?

Even with a dct (had one in my z4) I never felt this was missing (actually I may have had it I can't recall... Never wanted to look).

I had tach and speedo and went up or down a gear as needed to manage the car. I'm all about "to each their own" so people are welcome to want what they want obviously, but I just don't.

If you aren't used to the position of the shifter (i.e. if the car is new), I could see how an indicator would be useful. I'm not afraid to admit that in times where I'm a little zoned out, it can be difficult to determine what gear you're in from a quick glance at the shifter, especially with the tolerance of the shifter. Another time that it would be useful is when downshifting; if you shift down from 6th to 4th, but you accidentally grab 2nd, having a quick glance at a readout on your dash would be useful before you clutch out. Again, not talking about drive at 10/10th, I think it's more useful for casual driving.

The display is not your current gear +1. It will recommend 6 when you're going like 35 mph in 3rd.

It recommends the most fuel efficient gear for your current rpm and speed.

+1

My beater is a Mazda 3 6MT and when I switch back after a while in the M2C I forget how it's geared and I occasionally confuse 6th for 4th after cruising for a while on the highway and try to shift into a non-existent 7th gear lol. 6th is super short in the Mazda, makes the M2 feel tall and that's saying a lot.

Exactly! If you need to look down to know the gear you are in...go to Automatic...
