What throttle input switches 8AT back into auto after manual override (paddles)?

It's useful to be able to downshift manually in auto mode using paddles or the sequential shifter but sometimes the car is reluctant to go back into auto mode. Is there a way to switch back into auto manually, or is it governed entirely by RPM or throttle input? If the latter, can someone clue me in? Many thanks.

I find that usually if you follow up a downshift with cruising or very light throttle inputs it will jump right back to where it was.

Also, if I grab the paddles for a downshift on the highway, I'll usually manually shift it back up to 8th when I'm done.

Lastly, if you want to force it back into auto pull the stick to the left to put it into sport, then pop it right back into the right. It might cause it to drop a gear but then it will put it back into auto when done.

You can also wait (under 30 seconds usually) and it will shift itself back to full auto mode.

I think you are right. This is too long, in my opinion. It should ideally be more like 10 seconds after throttle input is at idle or very low. I wonder if it's possible to code that. 30 seconds from the override itself is so long that, after making the manual downshift you need, you'll find yourself manually upshifting, and therefore possibly postponing that already lengthy 30 second delay. Still, the ability manually to grab a lower gear when cruising or decelerating is really helpful with quick lane changes or overtaking.

I appreciate the timer to automatically switch back. In my DSG-equipped GTI you had to pull and hold the upshift paddle until it reactivated "Auto".

Again, if you want to jump into auto quickly then just left/right the stick in and out of sport quickly and you'll be back in auto in less than a second.

I tested out the timings on this while driving in today:

-If I downshifted with the paddle and then cruised at low throttle, the car would transition back to D in about 15 seconds.
-If I downshifted, then upshifted into 8th (I was cruising on the highway) the car would enter D in about 5 seconds.

So that just adds to your plethora of options. 30 seconds may only be the timing if you're using the manual shifters in sport or sport plus, I tested while in comfort.

Very useful info, many thanks. It hadn't occurred to me that the reversion timings (and probably the throttle input settings that trigger the reversion to auto) might differ greatly according to the driving mode selected.
