wrong, very similar, both bmw, both fast cars, both good handling cars,etc....

they are similar........not on same level exactly, but similar...

similar is subjective, end of discussion....

cant just chime in with a 1/4 mile time and say not similar.

funny how the m235i is basically same as an older m3, yet ppl say the new m3 is out of this world different ? get real

new m3 = better old m3....

soo, m235i, is similar to new m3, done.

like saying a porsche boxter is not similar to a 911, similar platforms, one is faster, handles, & brakes lil better, so similar.

were not comparing a bmw x3 and m3 here kids.....

look up road course times for m3 vs 235i, they are SIMILAR.

you show trap speed of 1/4 mile and say cars totally different.

there are multiple different aspects that make up the car :

gas mileage
power
handling
feel
comfort
price
styling
suspension
drive ability
acceleration
top speed

list goes on and on.........

you point out trap speeds and say "totally different" haaaaaa

yes, the M performs better OVERALL in just about every single performance aspect, BUT, they are similar, the m235i performs well also, just a little bit slower.

how about acceleration ???

m235i - 4.5---4.6
m3 4.0

similar much ?

i can understand saying a 0-60 time of 5.2 and 4.0 are not similar, but .5 sec ?

I can't decide which thread I like more, choosing M235 over M3/M4, or which is better M3 or M235.

What is missing from the 0-60 in .5 seconds is time to distance & acceleration rate.

Cars at this level a .5 second spread is watching the other cars license plate get smaller. The plate will continue to get smaller as the rate of acceleration continues to favor the quicker car.

Beauty of a car or the relevance of a .5 spread is in the eye of the beholder. .5 tends to be a big deal to people who compete & not much to spec racers.

BTW YouTubes of tachs & speedo's are pretty meaning less as a measuring device. You need at least one of these to get good numbers.

There is about a .5 spread to 60 in the 328 before & after tuning. Both these car had equal 60ft times but by 60 the faster car was in front & extending its lead. By that time both cars were near their maximum acceleration rate with the faster car only gaining .1 over the slower car but still finishing well infront.

No a big deal to some but the end result is in a two car run one is a looser. By the end of the run the modified car will be moving at 172 feet per second as it finishes .6 ahead of the stock car.

Faster cars like the M3/4 & M235 will only increase this spread due to higher terminal speeds.

On a road course like VIR the stock M4 is about 7 seconds a lap quicker than the M235 an eternity in road racing.

So in my case the winner of the beauty contest is the M3/4. The winner of performance per dollar spent is the M235. But since the OP is bucks up & can buy an M3/4 if he chooses that's not relevant.

if this is your payment difference .. m3 is a no brainer. it's way more practical (unless u need/want xDrive, then the 235 is a no-brainer), way more of a performance beast, feels much smaller than it is on paper when you drive it on the track (I don't drive it that hard on the street), and is much more aggressive looking inside and out with the M appointments (seats, gauges, fenders, etc)

$120 is a major if, would be nice to see the numbers. Stripped vs. equipped etc.?

M3 stripped is $800 a month leased & $1160 purchase using BMW's std terms.

M235 stripped is $551 a month leased & $736 purchase using BMW's std terms.

Doing a cap cost reduction isn't a fair way of comparing numbers. That's like saying "I can get an M3 for the same price as a 235i....if I put $5k down"

$2k down is just another way of saying it's another $50 a month on top of the previous numbers.

The M3 benefits from a great residual right now, that's for sure.

My wife has a m235 and I have a m4 and the two are on whole different levels. The m235 is a great dd while the m4 is a much more raw vehicle in terms of every aspect. When ever I drive it I feel it is a bit sloppy at times with some oversteer. I came from an e92 m3 and I wouldn't compare the two either. If you are just comparing speeds to one another, there is much more than that. Taking pricing out of the equation hands down a f80 m3 is better. My wife tells me all the time she wants a m3.

Guy near me drives and owns an m4, and I took my M235 to him as soon as I got it. He had me ride in his. Then he told me he really envied my car; that the m4 just never calms down, it's great... except when you just don't want it to be so snappy and ferocious... and he did also mention his neighbors hate him (he drives off around 5:30 am every day)...

I will add that when he drove me in his m4... oh yeah, what a car, but I've always liked the more civil versions of the top car... JCW tuning kit on an S rather than raw JCW. I'm loving my M235...
