You still don't get what you need to track reliably in the nismo. But the reality was/is I simply couldn't get past the engine. So freakin harsh compared to either 2er. Plus, it feels big - mustang-like hood. Really wanted to like the Z. Second car? Maybe. Prob get a used p-car if I didn't need it to run every day.
I owned a 370z two cars ago. The headroom isn't that much less than the 2-series and the legroom is still prodigious -- it is, after all, a two-seat car -- and the interior is damned impressive ergonomically and tactile-wise. And, IMHO, it's the best-looking car you can buy under 40K new.

But yeah: the visibility sucks, the hood is massive ("Mustang-like" is apt), the motor doesn't like to rev readily (probably a big reason why Nissan stuck synch-match on it), it's very skittish on less-than-ideal pavement, and (here's my biggest pet peeve about the car) the rear strut brace that bisects the hatch may look trick but it KILLS storage space. That last point alone makes the car exponentially less live-able as a daily driver unless you have another car to, you know, go grocery shopping ...

Question. I continue to hear about the 370 motor not being rev-happy. How would you compare it to the motors in the 350Z (DE specifically) in terms of revs?

I have my rev limiter set to 8400. I try not to take it over 8000, but it revs just fine.

I think the problem is that you can rev the 370Z's engine, but it doesn't sound too happy when you do (at least with the stock exhaust).

So if I hop into a 370 from a 350, would I feel right at home or go WTF?

I have limited experience in the turbo 6 BMW's, but I don't consider my 350Z a rough motor despite it's truck heritage.

I guess thats right. I have headers, straight pipes and just two 12" glasspacks for my exhaust system. It sounds mean and loud.

The 370z is, by all accounts (including mine; I've driven a couple of 350zs), a sharper car performance-wise and closer to a raw sports car operationally; both were Nissan's primary aims when it redesigned the car. It got rid of a lot of the bloat and numbness, particularly regarding the suspension, weight, and steering. Unless you're a big fan of the 280z-to-300zx bloat effect during the 1980s, I think you'll like the 370z compared to the 350z.

As for the motor's ability to rev: it doesn't sound all that bad. I always found the stock motor heavy and sluggish in that regard compared to other cars like it, particularly winding down from higher revs with no throttle input. An effect like that is usually due to a lot of inertia in the drivetrain: heavy flywheel, high relative compression ratio, etc. It's not a dealbreaker, just notable as a tendency of the car.

Ok the GTR driver is obviously sleeping behind the wheel. But hey, enjoy your car. All good.

Well, I think my flirtation with the 370Z may be over.

I drove both a Sport and a Nismo Tech this week.

The Sport is pretty much every bad stereotype of the 370Z: the interior feels cheap, the engine sounds incredibly coarse (especially above 5K RPM), and it feels stiff, but not in a good way.

The Nismo, though, is not like that. The little Nismo changes never seem like much on paper (better seats, better interior materials, more sound deadening, new exhaust), but, man, they sure seem to add up to more than the sum of their parts. The Nismo feels much more upscale, drives much more nicely, and sounds better, too (although, the engine sound is still leagues away from, say, a Porsche Cayman).

Unfortunately, the Nismo gets ruined by that stupid body kit. I actually really like the look of it, but when the salesman warned me to be sure to take the driveway out of the parking lot at an angle to avoid scraping the front aero package, I realized that the Nismo is not for me. The driveway to my house is a heck of a lot steeper than the driveway at the dealership, and if the driveway at the dealership is a risk, what's going to happen when I try to pull the Nismo into my garage? There is no way I'm going to be driving a car where I have to worry about damaging the body work all the damn time.

So, I'm back to the M235i. But, at this point, if I order one, most of the summer is going to be gone by the time I get it, so maybe I'll just wait until next year and see what's going on with the M2.

The M2 should be phenomenal. If you can wait, I would. Plus, there might be a few slightly used M235s available here once it launches.

I found this (non-English) YouTube video that gives you a visual comparison between the latest 370z Nismo Tech and an M-performance M235i:

by the way, I was able to sit in a Nismo Tech over the weekend and I have to second an earlier post that mentioned the red Recaro seats being reason enough to get the Nismo over the m235i; also the Nismo sits really low to the ground, giving me the impression that the Nismo is more suited for Track days while the M235i is your better DD

Agree with this.

Numbers aside, these are two very different cars, each with their own feel, heritage, and practicality vs sports car focus.

They are quite nice, aren't they? I really wish you could get something similar on the 2 series.

I am very curious to see what the seats will look like with the M2 i.e. how different they might be from the M3/4, alcantara or all leather
they certainly won't be the full Recaros but as long as they are 1 piece with large bolsters, it is a compromise I am willing to make to justify the M2 as my next DD
