2017 model

I want to order a new 2 series. Leaning toward a bare bones 228i to keep weight down. I am wondering if anyone has seen info about any changes expected on this model for 2017, especially in terms of suspension packages available. I have read that the new model will likely be 230i. Also, what is the earliest date I could order a '17?

The biggest change is that free maintenance will be three years beginning with the 2017 models vs. four years for the 2016 models.

Otherwise too early to tell. Try contacting your local dealership as they start ordering their cars.

Won't the 2017 models also move to the B engines when they get their name change? Or is that just a rumor?

I pulled this off another thread for future models in the pipeline. Looks like 2017 will only be the new motors, not LCI. LCI looks to occur in 2018.

"M140i / M240i (MY2017) will add ~15hp compared to the B58 output in non-M-performance cars, similar to what M135i offered above regular x35i models.

So, to clarify:

2016 M2 - not LCI
2017 230i and M240i - not LCI, just new engines, plus whatever parts BMW adds across the board for the new model year (in this case wifi hotspot)
2018 230i and M240i - LCI with engines introduced a year earlier.
2018 M2 will get new LCI design features in the places that it shares with regular 2er cars. Whether it will also be called LCI, is unknown - BMW is very inconsistent in that regard when it comes to M cars."

As an example, take a look at the 2015 335i versus the 2016 340i. Not huge changes (outside of motor), but it's probably the most noticeable changes they'll make until the complete redesign.

I read an article that said a 340i was actually slower than a 335i from 0-60. With the M235i having 20 more horsepower than a 335i, what does that say about a M240i?

I have a "bare bones" 228i 6MT on order, should be here end of Feb.

Options:

Glacier silver metallic
Heated front seats
Park sensor/rear view camera.

Nothing more...

An inexpensive "fun" sports car

Seconded. First-year anything -- particularly mechanical internals -- are always a dubious risk. Though granted, the Bxx engines will have been around a year in the 3-series. Even so, I'd either order a 2016 or wait until 2018.

I would do the same. What's the LCI timing on the 228? I don't follow that model much. You also may be able to score a good deal next fall if you can wait if your dealer has something on the lot that interests you. That's always the best time if you want the outgoing model and can be flexible on options.

I got my $50k T-reg for $38k out the door as it was a 2007 leftover that I got in Dec when the facelift had already hit dealers, just as an example.

LCI's supposedly 2018 for the 2-series. That's another reason I'd wait: the freshened 'look' and key updated bits (LED headlights and taillights, for instance) will have been vetted in other BMW models before the 2-series LCI retrofit. Plus, the model will simply look more fresh for a longer time (and hold resale value better compared to 2017).

More than that,

outside the maintenance being shorter, brakes are no longer included, neither are clutches, or wiper blade inserts.

Basically the maintenance includes oil changes....

Apple CarPlay (iPhone / android mirroring software) is supposed to also be included or be an option in 2017. Essentially a simplistic display of your key phone apps. Long term a car without this might seem dated like being without bluetooth today? Time will tell.

I wouldn't hold my breath for true Apple CarPlay; BMW and Apple do not get along. That's been very well documented. Bluetooth is a cross-platform standard that had very little competition for universal acceptance and adoption. It's a very different story for iOS vs. Android vs. Windows Mobile.

I agree that BMW seems to have its own route map for ICE and the like, there's a story here from CES this year that supports that view.

You shouldn't be concerned for the free maintenance changes related to MY 2017, I was charged for brake discs on a 2013 f30 with 23k due to "rust," which is funny since they're made out of cast iron that rusts naturally due to oxidation. BMW NA customer relations accepted my complaint and refused reimbursement with no explanation. The employee representative was unprofessional and said that yes, because of the rust on the rotors, I would not be reimbursed. This jokester made it very apparent that he has probably never seen a brake rotor in his lifetime. My preferred dealer (not the one who performed the crooked brake service) told me 2017 will begin production end of March or beginning of April.

This is not true. At the Leipzig plant, current-year models cease production in early July, after which most plant employees take a 2- to 3-week vacation while the plant is retrofitted and stocked with any new equipment needed for next-model-year production, which typically begins the first week in August.

Your dealer may be referring to mid-year changes, which are almost always minor and typically occur at the beginning of March in the production year.
