What Information Does the Key Fob Carry?

I know that the key fob carries individualized information on seat and side mirror adjustments.

Can anyone tell me what other settings or information is carried on the fob?

Since we have two drivers, I'm wondering what settings, if any, I need to watch out for in coordinating our usage of the same car.

Many thanks.

In page 36 of manual there is a long list of info that can be contained in each remote-profile. Things like daytime running lights, navigation, volumes and more.

Great, Scott. Thanks very much. Got the car yesterday. Getting to the manual today. That's exactly what I was looking for.

Just to geek out a bit; I'd speculate that the key fob carries an id value while the ECU stores profile settings based on the id. Sorry, I'm a software developer. I can't help but see code everywhere I go.

Right, the Key just has an RFID tag that says "I'm key #1, use the last set profile for key one" which has to be set in Idrive. You can set both keys to the same profile as well if thats what you want.

Otherwise, everything that the iDrive profile remembers will be recalled once you unlock the doors with that key. If you have both keys nearby the one that opens the drivers door will take precedent.

Garage List
It also carries a whole bunch of service info as well for the advisors at the dealership. What services are due, fuel level, engine temp, check control message history, etc etc.

Yes, there's definitely a little bit of writable memory on the key. Even my 12 year old 3-series stored data like the car's mileage, fuel level, etc. on the key.

Ah. And do you suppose that is why these keys cost $400 to replace?

Interesting, doing some more digging I stand corrected. Looks like they keep the key writable after all. Never saw my dealer use that before.
