i can't seem to get a clear answer on this. Does the 2016 M235i have the engine noise pumped through the speakers?

Yes. The 2016 does have active sound design (ASD).

Correct! You could either code it out or buy a harness that will also remove ASD.

Lovely, thank you. I'll be doing coding as soon as my adapter arrives anyway, so that seems like the 'best' solution.

Don't knock it until you've tried it. Drive with the ASD for a little while first. It's not uncommon for guys on here to turn it off then re-enable because it's too quiet.

I quite like the ASD. The car is very quiet inside, and since it's just piping a noise I would be hearing if there was less sound dampening, I am OK with it. It's not like they're giving me a noise from an engine I don't have.

I'm still waiting for my car so I have only driven an M235i on a 48 hour test drive. I found the continuous "rumble" in Sport sufficiently unpleasant that I kept putting the car back into Comfort. The sounds in Comfort seemed well judged to me, just emphasising high revs and that lovely vroom when the engine is started.

So I liked ASD in Comfort but currently intend to have it inhibited ASAP because it will put me off driving in Sport, a real shame. I will ask the dealer to do it after I have driven my car with the relevant fuse pulled - just to make sure I'm not making a big mistake. I presume I can't just have the Comfort level of sound.

Any thoughts on my plan?

That's too bad you didn't like it, that "rumble" is music to most of our ears here

Have you looked at a 228?

It's actually synthetic, and can be from an engine you don't have if you set it that way.

I enjoy the ASD as well. I'd consider after getting the MP Exhaust if it were to impede my enjoyment of that add-on, I suppose.

I believe the fuse is the radio fuse, so no radio for awhile if you go that route. I personally liked the asd on my test drive. We'll see how I like it after I've lived with it for awhile.

It's ironic isn't it, I chose the 235 because I love the straight six (it'll be my 4th) but I value it for being so smooth and quiet. Each to his own, I guess.

Thanks for the thoughts.

Pick up the harness that kills the ASD. Cheap and effective way

I'm curious...if I put an exhaust or downpipes in my car - does the active sound change inside the car?

no, it's a recording not a live amplification.

I was asking on an older f30 post, can I have the car in Sport mode with the Sport drivetrain configuration disabled and still have ASD? I want to have ASD on at all times but don't want the throttle response of Sport mode or to take the fuel economy hit of being in Sport mode.
