New B series engines
Hi,
I'm thinking about a new M235i but i would rather wait until the new engine is fitted.I understand that this new B series engine will go into the new M135i from March this year .My question is does anyone know when that engine will go into production for the M235i ? Thanks in advance.....James |

I can't seem to find the source to link to right now, but I believe it has been posted from a reliable source that the 2016 M235i, which begins production in July, will not have the new B engine.
UPDATE: Here it is http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1008378 Quote:

Well, I'm not sure where "making sense" comes into the picture anywhere when figuring this stuff out. BMW certainly has their reasons for doing what they are doing, whether you agree with them or not is up to you.
I imagine that there are several reasons for bringing the new engines into different models at different times. The most obvious being that when producing and implementing a new engine, you want to phase it in bit by bit rather than just dump it into everything and hope for the best. This would allow them to streamline production and work out a few small issues before going full-blown. Also, 2 series is fresher than 1 series at the moment, so it would explain why 1 series gets it first. I believe those charts also show the 3 gets it before the 4, likely for similar reasons.

I cant wait until this comes out just to spend my time reading the new generation of the N54 vs N55 debate.
"Yea the B58 makes more power and torque and weighs less and uses less fuel and doesn't break as often but it just cant compare to the feel and the pull of the N55, I am going to stick with my 2014-2015 N55 Based M235i forever until BMW comes to its senses and puts the N55 back in the car" -Sincerely, someone who has never owned either engine lol |

Sometimes they wait until the mid life update of a vehicle to make an engine change so 2017 model would make more sense. I would think definitely after the M2 is launched because why would you be out trying to sell everyone on the merits of the more powerful 340 hp engine at the same time the same engine is going into the M2 ( with slightly more power). I would think they would want to separate those launches by a year. Look at Mini, some have the old engines like the Countryman while the new models have the new engines. The Countryman could use the new engine more than anything due to the size of the vehicle. The bigger question is what will the hp actually be, the 340 3 series is rumored to have 320 hp so BMW would have a strange situation with a M235 having the same power. Guess we will know when they release the specs of the new X4 4.0 later this spring, I think it launches this fall. It's an M Performance model and will go against the Macan model that has 340 hp.

I've owned both the N54 and the N55 engines. There are reasons for wanting the N54 over the N55, but it has nothing to do with any of those things mentioned above. I don't know why anyone would wait for the B series engines, when the N55 is such an excellent engine.

The B58 has some large shoes to fill(or say engine bay), the N55 is almost perfect. Aside from a power bump and an increase in mpgs I don't see how it could really be much better.

Technically 2nd year. The 340i will have it beginning later this year.

Really? not me...
I owned E46 M3 and while its my favorite of all time, I (and many others) did not like the raspy sound of that vehicle. Now the S65? That was pure porn (especially at high rev and cold start-up). I miss that motor even with its lack of torque. Love me the N55 btw - smooth as buttah and I like its tenor with the M Performance Exhaust too.

engines between 2016 228i and 2017 230i
Hi all,
I've been planning on ordering a 2017 228i ragtop via an ED in Sept. And I've just heard about there being a change in the engine for 2017 to a B46B20O0 engine. I've not owned a BMW car before and am trying to understand the differences between the motor in the current 2016 228i and I've not had any success in researching this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The new engine has a little more power and a little more efficiency (economy and emissions). It's not a big change. The new motor is fitted in the current 2016 MY 3-series cars in Europe, so you can read about it in reviews of the 2016 330i in Europe. The current motor is excellent. Also, as noted elsewhere, the free maintenance that the first owner gets is reduced beginning with 2017 model year from 4 years and 50,000 miles to 3 years and 36,000 miles.

Thanks. That's most helpful. Yes, I'd already read about the reduced service period. That's not a big deal for me as none of my cars over the years have had any included maintenance.
I will not put it on my research list to learn about the new motor. Quote:
