OP I'm in the same boat as you, very similar configuration options. Unless you get a great deal on a loaded 228i go for the M235i. 3 liter 6 cylinder engines won't be around forever so make the most out of it and go big.
For the sake of 3 grand I'd rather have that extra grunt and that beautiful sound. |

The Tech Package is REALLY good! I find it necessary to look up the traffic conditions here in LA.
Is it ~2000 dollars good? That's entirely debatable to you. But for me, it's been worth every penny. Considering what I had to put up with before: A cheap smartphone mount. I had to store it away each time I leave my car out for extended amount of time, out of fear that someone would try to break into my car looking for an expensive GPS unit... The chances of this scenario happening are low enough that I mostly forget about storing away the mount after a few months, but high enough that I still hear it happening to people I know. And for what? A cheap phone mount.... |

You could by 2 new iPhones and even an iPad for that money so what's the point of paying 2k for BMW's. The phone mounts now will nicely clip into the air vents and Apple stores have them.

Also, it doesn't just get you Nav, but also the upgraded iDrive which has several features not available on the standard iDrive, as well as a much bigger screen that can display more info through the system than the smaller standard one. Like I said, it's not essential, but it is very nice to have.

Appreciate everyone's feedback. Definitely a good eye opener. I have decided to skip the tech package since I dont rely on Navi that much currently. I have decided on option A, but with a caveat.
The debate is coral red leather vs track handling pkg. I have driven a leather car and had a e92 with leatherette in the past. Always dreamed about having a red interior until I got good seat time with the leather. Wow, is it just me or is it quite rough and stiff!? I had to do a double check and found a sensatec to sit in and it was marginally softer in feel. TBH at that point, it felt like the premium cost for leather would just benefit in the smell and the color. With that said, it seems as tho the track handling pkg would be more worth it, but due to the limited availability I have yet to get near one. |

I never drove the 228. Coming from a 2.0T Audi A4, I wanted more HP, more torq, and just did not want to end up wishing I had more power. M235 and love it! If you need coding up in PNW, more than a few of us can do!

C or D If you go for one of the 4 bangers you will always be wondering about the creamy 6 pot engine. Even though you won't admit it.

Just wanted to note that my 228i definitely feels like it puts the power down a lot better than the A4's that I've driven in the past.

Mine was APR tuned, lowered, and setup better than stock :P From a stand still, in wet weather, I could get all four wheels spinning. I bet the 228 could be really fun as well, just loved the grunt of the 6 cylinders instead.

I, personally, am willing to spend the extra bucks to paint a wider smile on my face each day that I own my 2 series. But, I don't know about your financial constraints. That said, I'm sure the 228i is also a blast to drive. You just have to learn to live with that feeling of missing the 6 cylinder (or not, if you really don't care).

Great minds think alike BTW, ignoring the M235i for a second, how do you like your A4 overall ? And the engine in particular ? I think the engine is a lot of fun, but has considerable turbo lag that does bite when wanting to pass. My GLI and your A4 are very nice cars, no doubt, but the M235i is sublime

Not sure if you drove the 228i as well, but it really does have a personality of it's own and I think it will surprise you. And IMO much better than the 2.0T as well. |

I went back out to look at my car. There is a small rounded-edge square cutline under each headlamp, which I presume covers the washers...never paid attention to that before. Are those small cutlines the reason you gave up the heated steering wheel? Each to their own, but I wasn't sure I really understood what you were trying to avoid.
