Get an end of lease Audi A4 Quattro. They have pretty good reliability, have very decent performance and German engineering, but tend to be tuned more for comfort - less noisy, etc.

Heh
I'm thinking of a mini roadster as a second ... just to enjoy open air for spring and summer this year ;-)

How about a couple year old Audi Q5 Premium Plus 2.0T? It's a great all-around car with good power and handling. Quiet and comfortable. Good utility. Good gas mileage. Model update is coming out for 2018 so you could also probably get a good deal later this year on a new 2017 if you wanted to spend in the 40's.

There are even some 2015 Q5's out there that Audi is more than a little eager to unload |

I've wanted a Macan S as a second car. Been looking at the new 2018 Tiguan too, its just it would be nice to have a car I could be "rough" with and haul things around.
If not the SUV route, I've also considered the Golf R (before the M240i I had a GTI) and the F56 Mini Cooper S. This route is more for easy parking around the city and not as many road trips. |

That said I suggested the X1 to begin with, if it's big enough, bc that's a great very reliable engine and you still get the full warranty. Yeah it's smaller but from a performance perspective would easily out handle the Q5. That said the Audi is a very nice car if you need something bigger.

I recommend the "Deuce and a Half" M35. You won't get stuck anywhere... ever. It has all wheel drive and an axel that can be disengaged for something slightly less than all wheel drive. You'll laugh at whatever mother nature tries to throws your way. It'll run on pretty much anything that is a liquid and flammable. It has plenty of towing capacity so you could actually take your 2er for a ride as well. It also has a 5 speed manual transmission so you know it's sporty. Best of all it can be had for far less than your $40K ceiling. Worth point out it's not the most fuel efficient. So you'll like be spending a lot of the savings at your local gas station. But you know... first world problems. I believe this vehicle ticks all your boxes.
