Looking at a 228 MSport 6 Speed
Hey Everyone - I usually lurk around e90post, but wanted to come over here and get a few opinions on a car I'm looking at.
Cutting right to the chase, I have an 09 335xi right now. JB4+DCI...she's an absolute rocket. 109k, and in fantastic condition. Only issue is it's an automatic, and I'm quite honestly bored out of my mind making the 20 mile commute to work every day. I'm looking at a 2014 228 M Sport (CPO). My question to you guys is: What should I come to expect with owning a 228 if I chose to buy it? Are there any major issues that have been discovered so far, like the HPFP in the e9x? Are any of these things covered under warranty? Am I going to be replacing plugs/coils every other year? Just curious what I would be getting myself in to. I'm not worried about having to get my hands dirty either. If I wanted something low key, I'd buy a civic |

I ordered my 228i 6MT with Track Handling Package instead of MSport, but I've had no mechanical issues in just over two years. Worst was a rattle, which was completely repaired. So, you should expect to just enjoy the hell out of it!

I made a very similar move over a year ago. I went from an automatic 2007 e90 335xi (DCI, FMIC, CP, Kwv1's, Cobb AP w/ protune) to a manual 2014 m235i, that now is FBO w/ JB4. The main things why I switched were bc I wanted a manual, rwd, sport seats, and a more reliable engine.
The 335xi was definitely faster in a straight line and wayyyy better in the snow (obviously awd vs rwd). So if I feel that way about the 335xi vs an m235i you can imagine how the 228 will feel, I'd recommend considering an m235 if possible since you're coming from a 335. Even though to me the m235i is slower (not by much) it is a hell of a lot more fun then the 335xi was. When it snows I wish I still had the 335xi though... As far as working on it goes, I have to say things seem to have been much more accessible in the 2 vs the 3. (I DIY a lot, so this for me was a big plus I wasn't expecting). Consumer reports lists the 2 series as the most reliable car in the "sporty cars" group. |

Assuming the issue was handled under warranty? This one is a CPO, but I've heard the CPO warranty doesn't cover much... |

I own a 6 month old 228ix. All options except THP. It is very close to the two S2000's I owned in terms of fun, power and handling. But, more room, nicer creature comforts, sexier looks and it did well against the M235 and M2 in a R&T comparison test. For the money, I believe it is the best value out there.

In terms of the snow, I can imagine that's an issue in Wisconsin. Down here in Northern Kentucky, we rarely get snow, so I didn't want to make a purchasing decision based on something that will happen a few times a year (theres always blizzaks , but I understand where you're coming from. Thanks for your input! I'm doing some shopping around right now. Don't really need a car, but am itching for a 6 speed and we all know how logic goes out the window when it comes to the things we like |

I'm sure the 228 is fun and a bargain, it does weigh less too which makes up for some of the lower power output. I bought an m235i so I have a slightly biased opinion as do owners who bought 228s. I'd test drive both back to back, you have the time... |

The weight balance of the 228 versus the 235 is subjective really. I daily my 228 that doesn't have any of the sporty bits and it's a very fun car in stock form. All I have done is replace the runflats with HPAS tires and add some rear camber. I drive 100 miles a day round trip to work and it makes the drive fun and livable. The 34-36mpg average doesn't hurt either.

Yes, the rattle was covered under BMWNA warranty.

One other tip for added steering response/handling fun....swap out the Lower Control Arms for the ones from the M4. Turner Motorsports has the kit. (turnermotorsport.com). It's been a great upgrade!

This criticism of the M235i being unbalanced is 100% the opposite of what I experienced. It was made originally in one late-in-the-day US magazine review that was obviously looking for something original to say after 8-9 months of fulsome reviews. I would accept that for anyone used to an M2/3/4 or a Porche, the M235i steering, though precise, is a bit detached. But I found that the 4-Cyl 2 Series were a bit too light at the front, not the other way 'round (but really, I don't see any variant is being noticeably unbalanced). Also beware of M2 vs M235i comparisons - I think that the two cars are different variants and you'll like/dislike each for different reasons. I came from a 330d xDrive Touring which was terrific in many ways but I've never regretted swapping to the M235i, and I've owned a Lotus Elise 111S and a Porche Carrera 4S and found the M235i a preferable alternative - I loved the Lotus and the Porche but not as a DD and in the end got tired of how often I left them in the garage. I currently have winter square setup with Pirelli Sottozero S3s on and am off to the the Alps in it later this month. With these on, DSC off, and some chains in the boot I don't anticipate any issues with it being RWD. Last year, in our convoy crossing the snowy Jura Mountains the only car to end up in the ditch was an X5, who was pulled out by a little FWD Fiesta, much to everyone's amusement.

I love it. I had lots of sticks and its time for the auto. Shifts are amazingly quick and I have the paddles if I want to shift.

Actually, now that I think back, there were two. The first one was when new, and the other more recent.
1) Behind headliner....piece of attachment hardware corrected. 2) Driver's door....defective attachment clip....door trim panel replaced

The first one has to either be a mistake or salvage. You could buy and total it and make 25k totaling it. The others seem normal. 30k for a three year old car with 25k on the clock that was probably 45k new. Seems pretty strong to me

I think the problem is the word 'tanking', which suggests that the prices of M235s on the market are suddenly plummeting. There is absolutely no evidence for that, except maybe for the 2106 leftovers on dealers' lots, if there are any, but that is true of all leftovers.
The fact is that any car out there is a year older, because we just turned a new calendar year! So the price goes down, FOR ALL CARS, not just M235s. If there is some real data showing a sudden plunge in market value for this particular model, I would love to see it. |

Because no one has mentioned it, OP, some of the early N20s suffered from loose timing chain tensioner. They are under warranty, but it's something to look out for.
