Test drove MT M240

Basically very disappointed. Suspension feels good but the motor leaves a lot to be desired. Very slow of the start. Slow to build up revs. Could be turbo lag or throttle lag.

No comparison to my 2008 135. The 135 jumps of the line, (with an AT for my wife). Even with nannytronics the 135 chirps tires when shifting to second and third.

I was all so close to ordering an M240 based on reports read. So glad I didn't.

I will keep searching for an M2.

This.

Have a 235 and I had to know if the 240 was even faster so I went to drive it, and it definitely is. Not by a wide margin, but definitely noticeably faster.

It will straight up smoke a 135 stock for stock.

I would guess it might be the difference between MT in a new 240 and DCT AT in a well broken in and familiar 135. As someone who just bought a 235 w/ MT off the lot with just under 200 miles on the odometer, I would hope you didn't take the new 240 for a demo drive and try to launch it and run it to redline. I am also hoping those who test drove my car before I purchased it didn't do that either - guess that's why you order if you can. I still under 500 miles so babying it a bit not running much past 3500. I'll give it another 1K miles before we test the limits of high revs and brisk acceleration.

This is pretty much why I ordered a custom build (that and I didn't want all the overpriced options dealers chose to stick in their cars)

OP, are you serious? I never drove the MT but the 240i felt a little faster on the butt dyno vs my buddies old 135i

Lol, he definitely won't like M2 manual. Probably would say same thing about M3/M4 manual. I think it's driver error... I had 2 135's (1) manual and (1) DCT and neither are close to M240i stock vs stock.

Always amused at how people make assumptions. I in fact do know how to drive a manual. In the garage there is an E46M3 (MT), a 2013 SHELBY GT (MT), wife's 135 (AT) and son's S2000.

Trust me I know. Furthermore, the next BMW will be number 15. First one was 1972.

The car in question had 4500 miles. I asked the sales person if I could press it. We had it in sport.

Sounds more like most responders do not have the proper perspective of performance cars. And I have driven an M4.

Oh well. There is always a risk that the car has been abused and not properly broken in. Alas, that is what I was able to drive.

In comfort mode it's laggy. In sport it's almost too much throttle from the get go. Did you change the mode? Honestly I've never heard that the throttle response on the car is bad.

As I found out the other day, the car has enough throttle to make a phone move from the cup holder to the rear seat! No lag there!

Keep the 135 then?

Based on the tone set in your first post, I can only suggest that you probably didn't have enough time with the car. This is because you're the first person I've seen to date, that has this amount of negativity towards the 2 series, especially for the new B58 motor. Biased? Maybe.. a bit? That's how your post will look to the majority, here. I don't know really, because I don't know you, but you say you have an E46 M3 in the garage? Have you seen what an M235i can do to an E46 M3 on a track? It would pretty embarrassing to me, for a non "M" car to do what it does, to an E46 M3. Just throwing that out there. It's not always the car...

For that reason, I'm so glad I didn't buy an E46 M3. Catch my drift

I'm thinking this, or something else mechanical (I bet even cheapo or old gas would cut the power noticeably).

I'd say stick with the 135i. I had a 08' 135i MT and it was a fun car. One of the best BMW's I've owned, second only to my current M235i.

Numbers don't lie the the M235/M240's stock for stock are better in almost every metric vs. the 135i. The 135i has a leg up on the M in steering feel and overall rawness. No point in spending money on a new car if you're only going to miss your 135i.

In case you didn't notice, the AT versions are a bit quicker than the MT versions. Sad, but true. At least, this is true between the M235i AT vs the M235i MT. I doubt this little tidbit changed in the M240i versions.

Hey guys, everyone is entitled to post their views.. we have different views!

On balance, the reviews both in the press and owners are overwhelmingly on the positive side, which could suggest that the car you drove has an issue (as above) or simply the MT isn't the one for you.

I'd suggest finding another one to test out before you rule it out.. I think its a fantastic motor.
