Gauge cluster turning on and off

I have a 2016 228i with about 2700 miles. Recently I have noticed that my gauge cluster cuts out and only on a specific stretch of road in Southern California. So far I only observed this when getting off the 57 north Nutwood Ave off ramp. When I saw this happened, I immediately pulled over and filmed this.

I observed that gauge cluster turns on and off. At the time I had navigation active and taking me to a route. If I cancel the navigation, the behavior stops and cluster goes back to normal. If I don't cancel my active route, the behavior will also stop if I drive away from this off ramp.

I was able to replicate this behavior 100% of the time if I drive back to the same off-ramp with navigation active. If no route is active, the cluster behaves normally.

I have seen other people report the same behavior on their f30 3 series or m3 on the forums and they also report that the behavior only happens at specific locations.

Not sure what could be causing this but because it only happens during a specific scenario, I will bring it up at my next service. What do you guys think? Software issue? Anyone else ever observe this behavior

Wow! that's never happened to me but my idrive screen has gone completely blank more than once. Also, the radio would go silent a couple of times for no apparent reason. Turning the car off then back on usually fixes the problem right away, but the radio problem persisted for more than a day before somehow self rectifying.

Electrical gremlins...

The screen going blank is from it overheating in hot weather/direct sunlight.

I am suspecting that the gauge cluster going in and out could be caused by some kind of weird formatting for street name on the navigation page in the cluster, causing it to glitch out. As to what specifically could be causing it, I am still not sure.

How can I tell what software version iDrive I have, map version etc. so I can see if they are the latest.

By the way. Does this only happen to you in certain locations only as well?

I had this and reported it in the thread started by somebody else who also had it. My belief is that there's a bug in the graphics code which draws nav stuff on the instrument panel display and it crashes and reboots when asked to draw a particular junction layout. That's why it only happens in specific locations. I can't find the other thread right now.

Is BMW aware of this issue? I hope that they can get a software fix out to fix this.

Here's the thread (with a link to the same issue on the F30 forum): http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1227729

From what I've found, a software update fixes it for some people; others have ended up with a cluster replacement. My car is scheduled for its first service next week -- I'll report back with details/diagnosis after that.

I took the car for its first service today, and mentioned the cluster restart. I also showed them one of the examples on Youtube. One of the guys said he was familiar with the issue, and there is a programming update that can be done. Said it will take 3-4 hours. I'll schedule this for a later date - they wouldn't do it today since they were out of loaners, and if anything goes wrong with the update, they'll need to keep the car overnight or longer... I've only had the issue a couple of times, so there's no rush to do it immediately.

I have been reading through these posts and also want to chime in.

I am also experiencing a similar issue on my 2016 M235i with my instrument panel resetting in Florida, USA.

It only happens in my case with the following conditions:

- A destination MUST be programmed into navigation. If a destination is not programmed I can't repeat this issue.
- Only experienced issue on a portion of a road in Orlando, FL area (1000ft) and stops happening when continue to drive on road. Also when I turn off my destination at the traffic light while the problem is happening, the problem goes away which I find interesting.

Here's a video with exact symptoms that user ut745 posted on Sat Oct 31, 2015 4:00 pm.

Starts happening around 1:00 minute into video.

What was the outcome ?

Did the software fix correct this issue ?

So good news. I took my car in and let them know of the issue. They said there was a service bulletin for this issue. Oddly, my car's production date was a couple days off the bulletin timeframe but they still did the software reprogramming anyways.

Afterwards, i started a navigation route to my usual "problematic" destination and was happy to see that the cluster no longer reboots.

So if you are still having the issue, wouldn't hurt to ask the service department about it. If your issue is identical to the ones posted on the videos, it is definitely not a hardware issue and should be fixed by software update.

I used to work for BMW and I never saw this once! Glad to see that it was an easy fix and they took care of it. Now hopefully it doesn't happen to my M235i!

Can you get more info about the service bulletin they found? My SA was ignorant of the issue. They ran a full electrical test and did not turn up any faults, no ODB faults recorded and none to the key fob. Since it is intermittent, it is hard for me to catch/record, but they sent me home only to come back soon after it happens again.

I need to go back with more info, though they should have been more thorough.
