Hello, I’m a newbie to the forum and reasonably new to the bmw world.

I have an F22 M240i

A few weeks ago I hit the Kurb in the ice on old tyres. The shunt was enough to bend the lower rear right wishbone and slightly buckle the respective alloy inwards.

I took the car to an independent BMW garage. I suspected a buckled wishbone after inspection. I didn’t tell them what I suspected to be wrong, dropped it off and low and behold they returned it the next day with a new wishbone installed (spring carrier) I’m pretty sure they didn’t carry out an alignment.

A new set of alloys later and many hours of staring at the wheel in question, it still doesn’t look 100% right. There is still slight negative camber and almost a slight toe in. I have the car booked in tomorrow for a full realign so I’m hoping this will rectify the issue.

We got the car up on a lift and looked at connection points to the sub frame, nothing else seemed bent under close inspection with a mechanic and all other lateral control rods seem intact and plum.

The car gives me spurious TC warnings at 30-40 mph in right turns, I haven’t actually felt the wheel lose traction but am wondering if the misalignment is causing these warnings or if it may be a faulty sensor.

Like I said, my car knowledge is limited, I’ve learned a lot about the car since I’ve had this issue and would like to know if anyone else has faced similar issues. I’m willing to learn more about my car through this forum too!

a shop surely wouldn't replace the spring carrier without doing an alignment. however it is still possible they were lazy and maybe only went off a paint mark or similar.

I have a friend who was in a very similar situation as you but instead his right rear toe arm is what buckled. The bolt connecting the arm to the hub also bent. Replacement was simple but we obviously needed to get him an alignment.

The toe arm is intact but the washer attaching the spring carrier to the subframe is out of alignment. The marks do not align. It seems to want to pull to the right in a crab. Almost as if the wheel is toe in. BMW are doing a full realign on Monday, succumbed to forking out for it.

If an alignment wasn’t done, which would be shocking considering a major suspension component was replaced, the toe and camber could be off. It it visually toed-in relative to the other side? If it is, you should see horrible tire wear on that corner - large toe settings destroys tires way faster than large negative camber settings. If the car feels strange turning/cornering then that points to a suspension component being bent and/or the alignment being significantly off. Not being able to dial rear toe and camber into the middle of the stock values would suggest something else is bent. Good luck.

The car was taken to BMW for the realign and they suspected something still bent in the OSR suspension. Of course they quoted a ridiculous figure just for parts so i took the quote home and purchased an almost new wheel carrier and suspention assy. Its going back in on the 15th for the work at an independant specialist. Both places i have been to have pointed towards a bent wheel hub. This would make sense as the NSR was aligned correctly and was able to be adjusted within limits leading away from the suspicion of a bent subframe. hopefully all is good after this new axle assembly is fitted.

If it was able to be aligned correctly what was issue? It only looked visually off?

But wow, a bent wheel hub, you must've hit curb pretty hard.

The new parts arrived today, entire knuckle and wheel hub with bearings and a set of control arms. Hopefully the issue is in the knuckle and this new one fixes the alignment problems. If it’s anything to do with the control arms then the garage should be able to compare to the old ones when they have been taken off.

I did take quite a hit with it, everyone I’ve spoken to so far suspects possible knuckle damage.
