Dealership crashed CAS on my 2014 X1

Hi
I took my 2014 BMW X1 to dealership in Southern California for regular maintenance and oil change. They said they will have to put the car on computer module for testing the brakes or whatever. Next I hear from them, is that the CAS for my car has crashed. The maintenance guy said "CAS is a programmable part that is needed for your key function. When in programming our system crashed causing the CAS to crash with it." They are going to replace it as the car is still under warranty, but it will be at least 2 weeks before I get my vehicle back. This seems absurdly ridiculous and irresponsible to me. Is there anything I can do to take action against the dealer and to get compensated for the problems I have faced? This is not the first time though. Earlier they fixed something with the AC in the car and left some part loose that made the car make bubbling sounds when running.

Please suggest.

You can't blame a dealership for modules/control units crashing. They most likely had to program your car to correct your CBS (service interval) because your brakes were showing due too early. It happens more often than not and it doesn't reflect the quality of the dealership's service. It's more of a product issue and diagnostic method that causes these things to happen.

While unfortunate, you ARE being compensated for the CAS failure. They are replacing it under warranty. What is it you were looking for beyond that?

And yes, find another dealer.

Did they give you a loaner? If so fuck it enjoy the loaner and know that you will not be putting any miles on your car for two weeks.

Computer systems crash. Has happened here a couple of times. One time it bricked a set of gauges.

Ask them to pay for the time you are out of the car.
If I brought in a car that say had bad headlights and it takes 2 weeks to order, I'll be OK .
If they crashed the car I brought in for oil change and broke my headlights , I'd be furious as that was not what I brought it into and should not be out of MY car for 2 weeks, while I still have to pay for it

They are already doing all that is needed to make you whole. When the module will be replaced, you won't be able to tell there even was a problem. Upgrading your modules for free is a nice gesture from them, they are not forced to do it, or they could charge you for it, the fact that an odd crash damaged the module is just shit that happens. The only thing you should demand is a loaner for the meantime, which I suspect they have already planned and provisionned anyway. Overall you have not been treated badly and I see no reason to look for greener pastures from that story.

I think what "crashed" is the car and it's in the bodyshop for 2 weeks of repairs. I'd go by the dealership and ask to see it.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

As long as you are getting a BMW loaner, no charge, there is really nothing to be concerned about (assuming they didn't actually crash your car, as someone suggested)

Beyond the loaner, you can ask for anything you want, but your chances of getting it are slim to none, and I wouldn't bet on slim

(And, by "bricked," Mighty Mouse means to say the software update crashed the computer so bad that it's only functionality is to serve as a useless brick.)

A new BMW owner jumping to the brand and feels like they are so entitled (and oh, its also the cheapest BMW).

If every time my dealerships scans my cars without me even asking to fix them without bugging me for extra money even if its under warranty, then I'll be so thankful and will consider my self very lucky!

If you are making payments, they will pay the payment for that portion of time the car is down.

I had an X5 at a dealer for 29 days because of a back order battery terminal connector. BMW USA paid the payment for that down time. The dealer paid it and BMW USA paid them. My service adviser told me about the program. You also should get a loaner for free.

I seem to be in the minority here, but I do think the dealer should offer something for the inconvenience. Take care of the payment for those 2 weeks, give him a credit for future service, etc..

Yes it was a mistake, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be held liable. This was supposed to be a few hour event, and now it's going to take 2 weeks instead.
