Hey guys, just took delivery of my GS M235 yesterday and wanted to hear some thoughts on extended warranty if you bought it or not. 1L

Tough call. You will find a lot of advice on the internet about Extended Warranties. Many auto mags recommend you invest the cost of the Extended Warranty and use it to pay for any repairs. Unfortunately, it isn't as easy to reach a 10% plus return each year and repairs of the electronics on the latest BMWs is quite expensive. The BMW Extended Warranty is a good one, and you can purchase it a few years out as long as your vehicle is still under warranty.

Would the extended warranty be backed by BMW or by a 3rd party?

If it's backed by BMW I'd be more inclined to get it, depending on cost and coverage.
If it's backed by a 3rd party, then run away.

I have a 7year/100k/$0deductible warranty on my STI. For $2k it seemed like a no-brainer given the EJ and it's backed by Subaru, essentially a bumper-to-bumper warranty.

I bought the BMW 7 year/100k miles warranty. Since this is a second generation M235i, I'm anticipating anything without having to worry about digging deep in my pockets. I hope it will be put to a good use.

If you read up on Extended Warranties and look at the stats, these things rarely if ever pay for themselves - even with BMWs and Mercedes. I'm sure someone will chime in with anecdotal evidence to the contrary, but I don't believe in wasting my money on them. Essentially you are paying for repairs you have yet to incur. Self insure the risk. You'd have to have something major go wrong with something that is "covered" and that is the issue. Most of the large repairs would likely be wear and tear items and excluded. Just my advice.
