Forge blow-off valve (BOV) for BMW m235i F22 review

Hi everyone. I recently installed the Forge BOV. For those who plan to install a BOV, hope this would help with your decision.

One of the reasons why I installed a BOV is because I had a HKS BOV on my old Mitsubishi Evolution X. I missed the 'pppsstt' sound ever since. Thus, I had to install a BOV for the m235i.

The kit comes with all the necessary bits. A blue spring is installed in the BOV from the box. It comes with an extra red spring for higher boost. I used the blue spring since I didn't do any engine mods yet. The instructions were clear with plenty of photos.

Compared to the HKS BOV, the Forge BOV is not as loud, less sharp and less ear piercing. If you like your BOV to be loud and attention grabbing, Forge may not be your cup of tea. But if you like your BOV sound to be smooth, less obnoxious but still have some volume and a few heads turning, then you would like the Forge BOV.

Here is a link to a short clip I made. Of course, if you have any questions, or if you need more sound clips, feel free to ask. I'll try to help. Cheers!

Ease of install? And is this the site you had purchased from? Sounds really good!

Sooo the point of this valve is merely to give an air release sound on spoolup of the turbo.

partially. traditionally aftermarket BOV's also hold more boost than OEM installed valves, especially when higher than stock boost. not sure how the OEM one on the N55 is designed though

I was thinking the same for the N55 & the BMS intake I recently installed, I was shocked at how much the stock intake muffled that noise.
I'd assume this is a bit more noticeable, however not much different from what I hear in the video, plus the intake gives better throttle response and a couple HP.
Not trying to sound negative, thanks for the write up!

I would imagine this would come in handy for those who are increasing boost.

Hmmmm, I wonder if there is a way to log how this is affecting the stock tune since it is no longer recirculating. Also, how come it vents for such a long time? usually venting occurs a lot quicker than that.

Hi all. Thanks for all the comments!

jeffery_stearns : Yes, the BOV kit is the one shown on the link you showed ( http://www.forgemotorsport.co.uk/Blo...uct--1306.html ). Because I'm not a mechanic and I have no tools, I brought it to a shop to install. Installation is quite straight forward. The instructions were very clear with tons of photos (the instructions is available in PDF file in the above link, under 'fitting guide'). The only difficult part was removing the OEM diverter valve and installing the forge BOV valve because of the location (difficult to reach the screws). It took the mechanic a bit of time and fiddling, but otherwise it was straightforward.

qballis : I'll take a video of outside the car in the next few days. In the meantime, I took another video today of me cruising around, first with windows closed, and then windows opened. Hope everyone can get a better idea of the sound with this clip.

G4Z808 : So far no issues whatsoever. No engine lights / codes. Everything running smoothly. The OEM diverter valve is a thin piece of plastic. I took a look at it when the OEM valve was removed. I was surprised at how flimsy it is.
Yes, aftermarket BOV/diverter valve should be more sturdy and hold more boost than this plastic OEM valve.
Here's a link discussing the OEM diverter valve on the N55 if you're interested : http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=568852

Silvermike, and Bungee91 : We had a car meet recently, and a friend had the GruppeM carbon intake installed. I sat in his car while he drove it around. The OEM diverter valve noise with the GruppeM intake is definitely louder than stock airbox, but the Forge BOV is much much louder than the sound of OEM diverter valve with GruppeM intake.

configt : the HKS BOV I had on my old Evo X vents out the air at a similar rate than the Forge BOV, if I remember correctly. I didn't feel the Forge BOV was venting out air at an excessively long time though.

Hello everyone. Here's a clip of the BOV outside the car, with revving and drive-by as promised.

From watching the video above the Forge BOV does seem to be louder then the OEM Diverter. I'm running the AFE Magnum Force cold air intake and my OEM Diverter sounds no where close to the Forge BOV. Thanks for the videos! Buying mine.

No prob!
oh yeah that's true. I looked at Forge website and they don't have distributors in USA/Canada. Maybe can shoot them an email and see if they can send directly?
