The stock airbox intake with a high flow filter is best for sure !! i have said this more than once !! vbox data i have gathered validated this and is very repeatable

What high-flow filter are you using? Any others with recommendations?

Hi TTBEAR hope your well mate !! I use the K&N drop in filter and have the AFE intake deflector installed to ram cooler air into the stock airbox works really well for me.... you also remove the rubber flap over the top of the vent to make it work flow and fit correctly !! http://afepower.com/shop/details_new...rtno=54-12208&

What was the install like? Looks as if the bumper has to be pulled to install? I have not seen any dyno pulls of stock vs BMS. makes me wonder if it would still loose peak numbers on the stock tune or with the jb4? Perhaps just a dinan thing or perhaps stage II dinan would fair better with BMS intake? It will be interesting to see if and when we get some real world numbers of the Dinan Stage II when it gets released. That is looking to be a closed box intake, my personal preference. I am guesstimating the dinan intake to come in at $1200 based on pricing I have seen for other series.

Hi There G-Mann no bumper removal !! just the right hand side grill !! Pretty simple and effective install... can be alittle fiddly due to space restriction , but take your time it all lines up pretty sweet !! I have noticed the IAT drops by around 3 degrees which doesnt sound like much but when pushing the envelope on performance it all helps !! I also note the IAT drops alot faster after heat saok due to the additional air flow into the airbox !!

Okay, time for a custom intake system now. Run to Home Depot and get about 5 feet of dryer hose and Duct tape. Cut a opening in the firewall and pass the hose from one of the interior air vents to the intake snorkel in the engine. Run the A/C on Max recirculate and close off the rest of the interior vents to keep from freezing to death. This will stop all this heat soak nonsense!

I have similar set up but with an AFE dry drop in. Can you elaborate some more on the rubber flap removal ? When I installed my ram air scoop, all I saw was the oem rubber gaiter which is reinstalled to secure air scoop. Thanks |

After my disappointing results with the ER non catted DP-400/450-no gain over stock down pipes,I figured I would try the K&N drop in first before an open intake.
I have not been back to the dyno but did not pick up any trap speed when I ran it at the strip. trapped even lower! Another 12.0 but only 113mph although the DA was much higher compared to the day of my PB 11.49@114.3 with the stock filter. Also added a can of Torco to E30 so I am sure octane was higher. I have a BMS intake waiting to go on but may be I can return it since it is still in the box and buy the one Alz0rz has for sale as he is local.Let me know hw much you want for it, boss. Plan to get back to a dyno after the intake since all the local tracks are closed(may get one more run this year in Morocco near Chicago as I have run as late as mid-Nov in the past) |

Well nothing surprising tregarding a drop-in...changing the filter will have absolutely zero effect on performance.
All dynos have shown consistent 8-10 RWHP and 20 RWTQ gains with an intake (BMS and aFe), so I'd be curious to see Fletch F. Fletch's dyno procedures. Hood closed without proper fans to simulate airflow, then of course you can expect a loss of power. However that's not realistic since if you're driving, there's usually air hitting the front of the car. Usually. Another member on F30Post who is also as methodical as olaosunt and has his 335i GT 8AT at the track often (and also owns a fast Mustang. Go figure.) gained a consistent and repeatable 0.1 and 1 MPH with just the addition of an aFe intake. Those are results in line with expectation...small, but results none the less. |
