Upgrade to heated steering wheel

Looking for some advice. The wife is considering trading her 2017 230iX vert for a 2024 430iX vert (because of the 2 series convertible delete). The 430i she found does not have a heated steering wheel and the dealer is not willing to add this feature. Is it difficult to change after purchase?
I thought changing the wheel and turning the feature on would solve the problem. I don't understand adding heated seats $500 and not adding heated steering wheel $200. It is a deal breaker for the wife so we will probably have to order one.
Thank you

That is odd-heated seats and no heated steering wheel. I'd check the BMW NA website to see if the heated seats do include a heated steering wheel. Dealers are often wrong.

If the clockspring has the needed wiring in place you might be able to swap wheels. You would still need to add the button and relay in any case. I don't think it is likely to be a practical project.

Canadian here, ontario

I think it depends on the steering wheel, some options DONT have heated steering, or you loose it, I was looking to upgrade mine, but in REALOEM says (without heated steering)

Heated steering is weird, this BMW has it, but I'm only doing low millage to work, but then in a few minutes the car is boiling hot, I means its useful for getting into the car in the dead of winter, but most people wear gloves so you dont notice it

I also found if it was TOO cold they would not warm up when it was COOLER rather than freezing cold it gets hot rather fast.

Heated seats pretty much the same, it takes time to heat up and if your in winter with the heater on, it's pretty much no point.

WHAT IT IS GOOD FOR is my dodgy back

My car came fully loaded, so I have seats and wheel and do use it, if it's a toss up between seats and wheel, seats wins all the time

Hope I haven't confused things

Agreed, but I would miss the wheel on the very cold days because my drive to work is long enough for it to heat up.

I don't like driving with gloves and I have a 6 speed so it helps keep the hands warm between shifts.

It would be be WAY too expensive to try and add after the fact. Anything is possible, but you'd need to find a BMW wiring and coding expert to do this. At a minimum, you'd need the wheel, clock spring, new steering column surround with the heater switch/button, and then figure out the coding. I also know for a fact that there is a fuse solely for the heated wheel on the fuse block. This would be thousands with labor is using new parts.

If you love the car, just wear gloves until the interior is warm.

true but I find that even on a long trip the car gets hot so you end up turning it all off

Dont get me wrong a good feature,

if it comes with it, I'm good with it.

I used to drive to Scarborough from Mississauga in the 1 series, good 45minutes up the 401

I'd start off with coat, scarf ,gloves, hat, hoodie, like outside it's down to -15 or what have you, by the time I'd hit 10km's (out of the 40km drive) everything was off and I was sweating in my coat LOL

Same ~25min commute and the wheel is turned off half way. Seats never go to level 2 or 3.

Here's the F30 DIY (similar enough for our 2 series) https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1231186

The electric water pump helps these cars warm up super fast. Even when it is -30 out by the time I'm 3 blocks away the fan is already blowing warm air. So basically I use the heated seat and wheel only for the first few minutes till the seat and wheel are warm, and by then the ambient cabin temp will keep them from getting cold again.

What is the reason for not ordering exactly the car you both want and selling or trading in the one you have?
One of the beauties of BMW is that you can build the car to your liking, maybe not to the level of detail of a Porsche, but still.
And if there is nothing wrong with the current car, waiting a few months is not terrible. The wait time has been reduced considerably for most models.
Trying to refit a heated wheel is not a good idea under these circumstances, as others have noted.

Depending on what options the vehicle was built with you might have everything you already need expect the switch (and then need to code it - Bimmerlink is fine).

For example in Australia, all F22 M240's have the required hardware for heated steering (clock springs, wheel, etc) EXCEPT the switch ($100) as our vehicles are highly spec'd as default (eg LKW, etc).

If you use realoem, and do a bit of work, you'll see there is only a couple of M-Sport steering wheels (heated and non-heated) and which wheel you get in you car is dependant on other options (eg if it has the vibration generator for LDW).

I know a lot of the US guys had to retrofit wheels and clock spring etc to get heated steering and there are a lot of post on the 2 and 3 forums about the full retro-fit process. Luckily for me, it was buy a switch and then use Bimmerlink to code it on.

----
I just wrote all the above and then realised you said 2024. So G series.... So ignore the above...!

Different story for G series. I just went through all this as I just ordered a G42 (M240). I tried to piece all the G series info together to see if it would be a simple switch retro fit for a G42 if the wheel had the vibration generator for LDW, etc. In the end I gave up and just paid the additional ~AUD2000 cost for the exec pack for to get Opt248 (heated wheel). Annoyingly you cant just option 248 in Australia. You need to get the pack with tinted windows, drive recorder etc....

Lot of misinformation in here. I added a heated wheel to my prior BMW (F30, 328i) without issue. Requires purchasing a heated wheel, and the other column cover with button.

The wiring may already be there on your car (mine had it), but there is a guide on the F30 forum on how to run the wire if needed, not a huge project for any weekend warrior.

All in all, the cost is all based on how much you can find a heated wheel and the column cover / button for. The installation is very easy, even if you need to run a wire.

Sorry I don’t have the links to the threads handy but I’m sure your search/Google powers will find it. Best of luck!

Edit: the post below made me realize I forgot to mention that you do have to do some coding to make the heating work and the on/off status to show on your dash.

Just fyi if you're open to doing some extremely simple coding, you can override the temp settings for each step in the seat heaters. Honestly I would just bump the max setting up a couple steps, leave middle where it is, and drop the low setting a step (for you who get TOO hot).

ZL was replaced in my 2015 BMW M235xi, but the paddle shifter, horn, and steering wheel heater are not working. Is it possible to code in the SZL using expert mode in FEM? I believe the necessary adjustments are in 3140 PfLinSteeringWheel - LIN_VARIANTE_SZL. Please assist me with this.

Please keep in mind that the replacement SZL is not brand new. I bought it on eBay.

Heated steering wheels have certainly been swapped over. Try searching through previous posts in the DIY/Coding section or post your question there. Good luck! https://www.2addicts.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=578
